The integrated “system-on-a-chip” design of the EV7 Alpha chip translates into the desirable property of scaling all elements of system performance – processing, memory access, and I/O access – linearly with clock speed.

Performance gain 14% for AlphaServer GS1280 with EV7z (EV7 at 1.3 GHz)

The property of linear scaling with clock speed yields benchmark results for GS1280 AlphaServers system with the new EV7z (EV7 running at 1.3 GHz) systems that show a very consistent 14% increase (+/- a few percent) over 1.15 GHz systems; 13% attributable to clock rate increase and ~1% due to improvements in Tru64 UNIX since the last benchmarks were performed in Jan 2003.

AlphaServer GS1280 performance graph

Performance gain 16% for AlphaServer ES47 & ES80 with EV7 at 1.15 GHz

Now available for the ES47 and ES80 systems, the EV7 at 1.15 GHz also delivers a consistent improvement in performance across the board when compared to the systems with the EV7 running at 1.0 GHz. The 16% measured gain in performance comes from, again, the 15% increase in clock rate and about 1% due to improvements in the Tru64 UNIX.

AlphaServer ES47/ES80 performance graph

The performance of the ES47 and ES80 systems with EV7 at 1.15 GHz comes out virtually identical to the performance of the GS1280 with 1.15 GHz EV7, for the same configuration. This demonstrates again the consistent, unified design across the entire EV7 family AlphaServers – ES47, ES80 and GS1280.

AlphaServer ES47/ES80 vs AlphaServer GS1280 performance chart

Price/performance improves 25%

The increase in performance for the new CPU speeds at the same price as previous speeds coupled with reductions in the prices for the current CPUs and memory yield a price/performance reduction of about 25% across the board for all AlphaServer ES47, ES80 and GS1280 models.
