| Q1 |
Regarding
the KZPCC Backplane RAID Controller, what is the
- maximum logical volume
- maximum number of disks / channel
- supported raid levels
- supported disk types
|
| A1 |
Answers:
- 2047 GB
- Fourteen (14) devices per channel are supported
by the hp StorageWorks Enclosure Model 4314
Ultra3/LVD device shelf. However, Enclosure Models
4254 Ultra2/LVD, 4354 Ultra3/LVD and hp BA356 UltraSCSI
storage enclosures with the DS-BA35X-FC DOC2 I/O modules
only allow seven (7) drives per channel, and BA610-6D
internal disk cage only allow six (6) drives per channel.
- RAID 0,1,5,0+1,0+5 & JBOD
- Ultra3/LVD hard drives and Ultra2/LVD hard drives,
up to 72 GB and including 7.2K, 10K and 15K RPM drives

| Q2: |
Will KZPCC Backplane RAID
Controller support Clustering? |
| A2: |
The KZPCC devices are only
supported as data devices in Tru64 UNIX clusters. There
is no boot support available, and the storage cannot be
shared on the cluster. |
| |
| Q3: |
How can the KZPCC controller
be configured in an AlphaServer? |
| A3: |
The KZPCC Backplane RAID Controller
requires a graphics card and VGA display to configure
an array. Alternatively, you can run SMOR via a serial
line and terminal simulation software on a PC. Use the
SMOR utility for off-line configurations and the SWCC
for configuring RAID arrays on-line. |
| |
| Q4: |
Can tape drives or CD-ROM
drives be attached to the KZPCC? |
| A4: |
There is no planned driver
support for removable media devices such as tape drives
or CD-ROMs on the KZPCC Backplane RAID Controller. |
| |
| Q5: |
Does this controller use asynchronous
mode enabled ("write back" enabled) RAID? |
| A5: |
Yes. |
| |
| Q6: |
Is there a command line interface
for KZPCC (like the RCU for KZPAC)? |
| A6: |
No. We have Alpha SMOR (via
the console) for an off-line configuration utility and
the SWCC for an on-line configuration utility. |
| |
| Q7: |
Will the KZPCC controller
pass information on the status of cache batteries on to
the OS (Tru64 UNIX)? |
| A7: |
SWCC will capture this information
and make it available to the SWCC client, but it is not
passed on to the operating system. |
| |
| Q8: |
Is the on-line diskconfig
utility supported with the KZPCC devices? |
| A8: |
Yes.
For Tru64 UNIX V4.0F, you must install the optional
Tru64 UNIX V4.0F Patch Kit 6.
For Tru64 UNIX V4.0G, you must install the optional
Tru64 UNIX V4.0G Patch Kit 3.
For Tru64 UNIX V5.1 and V5.1A, this feature is standard. |
| |
| Q9: |
What software is required
for support of KZPCC devices under Tru64 UNIX V5.1,
V5.1A, and V5.1B? |
| A9: |
Tru64 UNIX V5.1 Patch Kit
3 (BL17) is mandatory for supporting the KZPCC controllers
and should not be removed on a system with these controllers
installed. If Patch Kit 3 is accidentally removed, recovery
procedures outlined in the CSC Release Notes must be followed.
No special software is required for supporting KZPCC controllers
on theTru64 UNIX V5.1A or V5.1B operating systems in standalone
mode. For TruCluster support with Tru64 UNIX
V5.1A (TCR 5.1A), Patch Kit 1 or later is required. |
| |
| Q10: |
Can a Tru64 UNIX V4.0F system
be upgraded to V5.1, V5.1A, or V5.1B with KZPCC controllers
installed? |
| A10: |
Yes, but the upgrade path
from V4.0F to V5.1 must first be from Tru64 UNIX V4.0F
to Tru64 UNIX V4.0G, and then from Tru64 UNIX
V4.0G to Tru64 UNIX V5.1.
The upgrade path from V4.0F to V5.1A or V5.1B must
be from Tru64 UNIX V4.0F to Tru64 UNIX
V4.0G, then from Tru64 UNIX V4.0G to Tru64 UNIX
V5.1, and then from Tru64 UNIX V5.1 to Tru64
UNIX V5.1A or V5.1B.

| Q11: |
Is the KZPCC controller supported
in EV5 platforms (especially the AlphaServer 4x00, AlphaServer
1200, and AlphaServer 800)? |
| A11: |
Yes, the KZPCC Backplane RAID
Controller does provide support on AlphaServer 800
EV5 platform, as a data device only. There is no
planned support for other EV5 platforms. AlphaServer
DS10, DS20E, ES40, ES45, GS80, GS160 and GS320 systems
are selectively supported with EV67 and EV68 processors.
|
| |
| Q12: |
What Tru64 UNIX versions will
be supported on the KZPCC? |
| A12: |
Tru64 UNIX V4.0F with required
New Hardware Delivery – 3 Kit (NHD 3) or later
Tru64 UNIX V4.0G and V5.1 with required Tru64 UNIX V5.1
Patch Kit 4 or later*
Tru64 UNIX V5.1A and V5.1B are supported.
* Tru64 UNIX V4.0G is not supported on AlphaServer
GS80, GS160 and GS320 systems. |
| |
| Q13: |
Can the KZPCC be used for
RAID on both internal and external drives attached to
an AlphaServer system? |
| A13: |
Yes, internal RAID is supported
now with the internal card cage (BA610-6D) on the AlphaServer
ES40, ES45 and DS20E systems, and external RAID is supported
via the hp StorageWorks Enclosure Models 4254, 4314, 4354
LVD device shelves and StorageWorks 1 UltraSCSI storage
enclosures. |
| |
| Q14: |
Can the KZPCC controller be
used with the hp StorageWorks Enclosure 4214? |
| A14: |
No. However, the hp
StorageWorks Enclosure 4214 (a single bus, single power
drive enclosure) can be upgraded to a hp StorageWorks
Enclosure 4254 by adding the Dual Bus I/O module (P/N
119829-B21), the Fault Bus EMU – Environmental Monitoring
Unit (Spares P/N located on EMU label) and a second power
supply (P/N 119826-B21). This is being facilitated by
an Advanced Parts Exchange program under the 4214 warranty
service. The second power supply is only required to equal
an hp StorageWorks Enclosure 4254; the KZPCC will work
with an upgraded Enclosure 4254 with only one power supply. |

| Q15: |
Can the KZPCC backplane RAID
controller be used for the hp model BA356 device shelf? |
| A15: |
Yes, a new DOC2 I/O module
has been released, DS-BA35X-FC, which can be purchased
as an independent option and installed in your BA356 shelf.
This DOC2 I/O module is required for use of the KZPCC
backplane controller with the BA356. |
| |
| Q16: |
What is the difference between
the currently shipping DS-KZPCC-CE and DS-KZPCC-AC and
the new ones being introduced? |
| A16: |
The new release is now providing
internal RAID support and also extending support to Tru64
UNIX V5.1A . The part numbers and pricing remain the same.
The revision number on the new controllers is changed
to D01 for identification. |
| |
| Q17: |
Will both revisions of the
controllers be available, and will there be an upgrade
kit? |
| A17: |
There will be an immediate
cut in of the new controllers. The older revisions will
be upgraded in manufacturing and will no longer be available
after introduction of the new revision. There are no plans
to provide an upgrade kit, but all software needed to
upgrade can be downloaded from the KZPCC
backplane RAID controller page. |
