Storage Library System for OpenVMS

Models

Storage Library System for OpenVMS V2.9C is now available to backup and archive your valuable programs and data.

Storage Library System (SLS) for OpenVMS is Digital's first automated backup solution. It provides backup and tape library services for OpenVMS and OpenVMS clients.

Introduction

Storage Library System (SLS) backs up and archives OpenVMS configurations across the enterprise, ranging from a standalone system to a network of clusters and workstations. SLS includes media management, scheduling and full cataloging for unattended backups.

Automated backup reduces the cost and time spent managing data and devices. SLS automates backups, provides for system archiving, and makes it easy to find files stored on tapes and disks.

SLS V2.9C includes support for OpenVMS V7.2, not including the new file system ODS5. SLS also supports the TLZ9L loader. This version of SLS has also been enhanced with a generic interface to robotic devices. This interface allows us to operate with direct connected SCSI devices such as the StorageTek 9710.

SLS V2.9C has been verified to be Y2K compliant and is compatible with Alpha EV6.

SLS is the automated backup solution for OpenVMS environments.

Features
  • Automatic, flexible scheduling of backup operations
  • Centralized services for user-requested backup and archiving operations
  • Online maintenance of information about backed up and archived files and volumes
  • Customization features to meet a variety of operational and site requirements
  • DCL and menu interfaces with online help for users, operators, and storage administrators

Benefits
  • Support for unattended backup operations using a variety of automated loaders including the StorageTek® automated cartridge server (Wolfcreek silo)
  • Built-in report generation and custom report generation capability
  • Support for remote backup and archiving operations directly between disks and tape drives located on different OpenVMS systems within a DECnet or DECnet Plus network without staging data across disks
  • Support for OpenVMS systems in both mixed-interconnect and mixed architecture OpenVMS Clusters
  • Integration with RMU/BACKUP and RMU/RESTORE, allowing backup and restoration of Oracle Rdb™ databases (up to V6.1) using SLS managed media
  • Effective use of all media capacity by appending multiple sets of backed up or archived files to the same volume or volume set
  • Security features to prevent unauthorized media or device use
  • In an OpenVMS Cluster environment, automatic failure recovery from the loss of a processor to allow continuous access to the SLS for OpenVMS media databases
  • Maintenance of counters for each volume noting the number of times a volume has been mounted and the number of errors associated with the volume; these counters are used to schedule volume cleaning when the counters exceed threshold values
  • Media life cycle control including maintenance of volume retention period, availability status, location, and scheduling of dates when volumes are to move offsite and return
  • "Round robin" device allocation to distribute drive usage among available tape drives
  • Quick retrieval of the files or restoration of disk volumes without the user having to know the names of the tape volumes on which the data was saved
  • Direct positioning to the start of each save set file during a restoration operation using saved information about the tape position of each save set file
  • Ability to print external tape labels in a customized format
  • Control of media allocation based on customer-defined media pools

Advantages

The Software Library System provides:

  • Cost-effective use of both personnel and equipment while preserving data integrity and normal business processes
