Introduction
Compaq ships the industry's only modular network interface controller that provides a scalable transition path from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet to Bonded Fast Ethernet to Gigabit network connections. The Compaq NC3134 Fast Ethernet server adapter includes two 10/100 BASE-TX ports with optional upgrade modules for two additional 10/100 BASE-TX ports, a 100 FX port, or a Gigabit port.
The NC3134 provides a cost-effective transition for server adapter upgrades. Its modular design enables additional fault-tolerant redundancy and the ability to upgrade to higher network performance without having to replace the base adapter.

Performance
64-bit/66-MHz Bus Support Efficient data transfer between the network and PC is essential for high-performance and low CPU utilization. The NC3134 includes a 32/64-bit PCI Universal Connector to work in either 32- or 64-bit bus slots, and it supports both 33- and 66-MHz bus speeds.

Port Bonding Transmit Load Balancing (TLB) and Switch-Assisted Load Balancing (FEC/GEC/802.3ad static mode configuration only) are two port bonding methods supported by the NC3134. TLB provides both failover and balancing of transmit traffic across all adapters for increased performance. For even higher performance, Switch-Assisted Load Balancing (SLB) provides port failover and balancing of both transmit and receive traffic across all adapters when connected to a switch that supports this feature.

Bus-Mastering The NC3134 uses bus-mastering technology to maximize throughput and minimize CPU utilization.

Performance Enhancements The NC3134 supports Interrupt Coalescence in all the major OS environments, reducing CPU utilization. The NC3134 also provides Receive Checksum Offload capabilities when it runs in a WindowsÒ 2000 environment.

Ease of Use
PCI Plug and Play Compliant with the 2.2 PCI specification, this server adapter automatically configures its I/O address and interrupt (IRQ) settings for easy installation.

Common Driver Support The NC3134 operating system drivers can be used for all Compaq Intel-based 10 or 100 Mbps network connections. No driver change is required when moving from 10 to 100 Mbps. Common drivers provide consistency, easy management and support, and save money and time.

Auto-Negotiation The NC3134 senses 10 or 100 Mbps and half- or full-duplex and automatically configures to the highest common network connection speed between the server adapter and hub or switch port.

Security/Reliability
Network Fault Tolerance (NFT) The network fault tolerance feature of the NC3134 ensures that the server can always keep an active link if a second adapter is installed. If the primary network connection fails, the second (backup) adapter will automatically take over, retaining the network connection. The NC3134 can be configured to fail over to any NC31xx, NC61xx, or NC71xx adapter by using the latest drivers.

PCI Hot Plug The NC3134 includes PCI Hot Plug support that enables PCI network controllers to be replaced or added to a server without powering down the system. This feature provides increased system availability and non-stop serviceability in business-critical computing environments.

Network Management

Standards-based

The NC3134 supports the following network management standards:

  • Compaq Insight Manager
  • Compaq Insight Manager XE
  • SNMP
  • DMI 2.0
  • Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM)
  • Unattended Install

Server Integration

Compaq's SmartStart configuration utility includes setup support for the NC3134 so that the adapter can be configured as part of the SmartStart configuration process. Compaq Insight Manager can recognize the NC3134 individually or in port bonded teams, and can collect and report SNMP statistics on the adapter events. The Compaq Network Management System can also collect and report SNMP statistics on the NC3134.
Integrated Management Log (IML) support is provided by the NC3134 for critical event logging on Compaq servers.

Configuration Utilities

The NC3134 ships with a suite of OS-tailored configuration utilities that allow the user to run initial diagnostics and configure adapter teams for Network Fault Tolerance, Transmit Load Balancing, or Switch-Assisted Load Balancing (FEC/GEC/802.3ad static mode configuration only) in the Windows 2000 and Windows NT® operating systems.
CPQNTAC supports Windows NT, CPQTEAM supports Windows 2000, and CPQANS supports NetWare.

Diagnostic LED Indicators

For each port, bi-coloured LEDs show link integrity, network speed, and network activity at a glance for easy troubleshooting.
