Introduction
The StorageWorks Modular Data Router (MDR) by Compaq is a 1U Fibre Channel-to-SCSI bridge that allows multiple host servers to communicate with a differential (or SE) SCSI tape device (both LVD and HVD) over a Fibre Channel link. Four basic models offer a combination of single or dual FC inputs and either dual or quad SCSI port output modules with a choice of LVD or HVD signaling. Each model has an expansion bay for an additional module, which can also be dual or quad port, HVD or LVD SCSI, giving a potential of up to eight SCSI ports in one router. A total of sixteen SCSI devices can be supported by this unit including DLT or AIT tape drives or a robotic arm and drives in a tape library. The MDR is supported on any Compaq hub, FC-AL switch or SAN fabric switch. The VHDCI-connector SCSI channels support the DLT Library Model 35/70, TL891, TL895, ESL9000 and SSL2020 AIT Libraries. The Modular Data Router ships with an accessory kit which includes module handles, a rail kit, and needed SW GBICs, fibre channel and SCSI cables.

Benefits
  • LVD SCSI CAPABILITY
  • INVESTMENT PROTECTION: Able to start with HVD SCSI and either add LVD SCSI (HVD and LVD can be mixed) or change entirely to LVD without purchasing another MDR (only need to add SCSI option kit).
  • CONNECTIVITY: Provides connectivity for up to (16) DLT or AIT drives with a single MDR tape controller.
  • INCREASED BANDWIDTH: Supports dual fibre channel inputs.
  • PRICE/PERFORMANCE: Lower cost per drive connection.

  • Standard Accessory Kit for single-port FC model includes module handles, rail kit, (2) short-wave GBICs, (1) 5-meter Fibre Channel cable, and (2) 6-foot VHDCI cables. Standard Accessory Kit for dual-port FC model includes module handles, rail kit, (4) short-wave GBICs, (2) 5-meter Fibre Channel cables, and (4) 6-foot VHDCI cables.
  • Minimum Configuration
    • Single-Port FC: Base chassis populated with 1 management card, 1 single-port Fibre Channel card, 1 dual-port SCSI card and 1 empty bay for additional SCSI card (dual- or quad-port)
    • Dual-Port FC: Base chassis populated with 1 management card, 1 dual-port FC card, 1 quad-port SCSI card and 1 empty bay for additional SCSI card (dual- or quad-port)
  • Maximum Configuration
    • Single-Port FC: Base chassis populated with 1 management card, 1 single-port Fibre Channel card, 2 dual-port SCSI option cards. Or, by replacing the original single-port FC module, this unit can be populated with 1 management card, 1 dual-port Fibre Channel card, 2 quad-port SCSI option cards
    • Dual-Port FC: Base chassis populated with 1 management card, 1 dual-port Fibre Channel card, 2 quad-port SCSI option cards

Connectivity Up to (16) SCSI devices with a single MDR tape controller (Dual-Port FC configuration) or up to (8) SCSI devices with a single MDR tape controller (Single-Port FC configuration). MDR allows the mixing of HVD and LVD SCSI modules.
For SDLT Drives, at a compression rate of:

1.5:1 - The compression rate is aprox. 16.5MB/s per drive * 16 drives = 264MB/s
2 (FC port) * 75MB/s = 150MB/s, Therefore 2, 2 x 4 MDR are recommended.

  2.0:1 - The compression rate is aprox. 20.0MB/s per drive * 16 drives = 320MB/s
2 (FC port) * 75MB/s = 150MB/s, Therefore 3, 2 x 4 MDR are recommended.
  2.5:1 - The compression rate is aprox. 27.5MB/s per drive * 16 drives = 440MB/s
2 (FC port) * 75MB/s = 150MB/s, Therefore 3, 2 x 4 MDR are recommended.
  3.0:1 -The compression rate is aprox. 30.0MB/s per drive * 16 drives = 480MB/s
2 (FC port) * 75MB/s = 150MB/s, Therefore 4, 2 x 4 MDR are recommended.

Manageability StorageWorks Command Console (SWCC) – a feature-rich management tool providing local and remote management of StorageWorks controllers. It is a user-friendly tool for monitoring, configuring, and troubleshooting storage subsystems.
Selective Storage Presentation (SSP) – allows multiple servers to share a single data router. And by providing a unique map for each host, the user can limit what each host has access to.
SCSI Controller Command (SCC) – provides a means for the host server operating system to determine the number FC LUNs supported by the MDR.
The MDR is only managable with CIM32 console if you are connecting the MDR to fibre via Persian of Jaguar HBAs. It is not managable using the LP7000 or LP8000.

Scalability Single-Port FC: Can start with 2 SCSI ports and grow to 8 ports (by replacing existing single-port FC module with a Dual-Port FC module and replacing the existing 2 port SCSI Module with a 4 port SCSI Module and then adding an additional 4 port SCSI module); can mix LVD with HVD; can transition to LVD without replacing MDR chassis.
Dual-Port FC: Can start with 4 SCSI ports and grow to 8 ports; can mix LVD with HVD; can transition to LVD without replacing MDR chassis.

EBS Configurations Supported Application partners include CA, Legato, Veritas and Tivoli.

Serviceability Faulty modules can be replaced and recognized without rebooting the host.
