Standard Features

Introduction
The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 is a Microsoft Windows-based terminal popularly referred to as a "thin-client." A Windows-based terminal or thin client is a client device that connects over a network to a Windows NT® Server running Windows 2000 or NT Terminal Server Edition or either of those operating systems with Citrix® MetaFrame® software running atop the server OS. This combination of client and server running a thin client solution is referred to as Thin Client Server Computing. The thin client is but one part of that overall solution.
A thin client Windows-based terminal only processes keyboard input and screen output, leaving all application processing and storage to the server. HP thin client solutions can allow companies to dramatically lower the costs associated with their client/server infrastructure.
Unlike a traditional PC with high-speed processors and data storage, these terminals are optimized to act solely as "windows" to the server where users' applications and data reside. Instead of applications running on individual PCs, all applications are run from a single server, greatly simplifying the administration and support needed to run an IT department.
While some knowledge workers truly need the processing power of a PC (such as engineers, designers, or financial analysts), many workers perform task-oriented, transactional functions (such as travel agents and call center operators), in environments, which would be ideal for the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20.

Simplifying IT management for the enterprise
IT managers must face an increasingly complex world. Thin Client Server Computing actually helps simplify IT administration for the enterprise. Utilizing thin clients instead of PCs allows the IT manager to simplify their entire infrastructure. Simplified computing means lower ownership costs and increased resource efficiency of each end-user. It also means an IT manager can manage all their clients remotely, manage a small group of servers rather than thousands of PCs across hundreds of miles. Finally, simplification allows rapid device deployment in a fraction of the time, because the average thin client is set up and running in well under 10 minutes.

An efficient alternative for client computing
Companies are facing escalating administration costs for their network environments. Daily tasks like password administration, upgrading software, inoculating viruses, or simply setting up new systems take up an inordinate amount of time of already overburdened network administrators. IT managers are struggling to make their budgets, meet their cost requirements and provide quality service to their constituents. Many of them have reached the same conclusion – that the PC is a powerful and flexible tool, but this flexibility is attached to a corresponding cost. IT managers realize that many of their workers who perform repetitious and relatively standard tasks require a computing device, but do not require the power of desktop PC. When a worker needs to access a legacy database for a specification, enter sales or accounting data, or just use basic email and a browser for example, a Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 is an efficient alternative to the PC.

Provides access to legacy systems and Windows NT Servers
Companies have invested large sums of money in mainframe systems with text-based terminals that in many instances still function adequately for particular tasks. It would be unwise to not utilize systems that are still productive. However, many new applications are written for graphical environments, which older, text-based terminals cannot access. The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 can perform as a terminal emulator, connecting directly to legacy systems, or as a Windows-based terminal for newer, graphical applications, allowing users to access both the old and the new systems.

Reduces the Lifecycle Cost of Ownership
Lowers Ownership Costs: The initial cost of the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 is lower than that of a standard PC, which provides an immediate benefit. However, there are additional costs that are also reduced when purchasing a thin-client solution.
Lower Administrative Costs: The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 terminals take just minutes to set up, not the hour or more setup time a standard PC takes to configure. Plus, software changes, maintenance, and upgrades are done on a central server, not on individual client PCs.
Reduced Technical Support Costs: The design of the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 reduces the cost of maintaining these systems. For example:
  • The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 has no moving parts; not even a fan. This results in fewer maintenance events and less down time.
  • With no hard drives, no diskette drive, and limited expandability, Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 end users cannot introduce new software or hardware into the system. This results in fewer hardware and software conflicts and configuration issues, as well as dramatically reducing the threat of viruses or data theft.
  • If a problem does arise, problem diagnosis is significantly simpler on a thin client terminal, compared to a standard PC, where the variables are greater.
No Client Upgrades: Each year, there are dramatic PC improvements, be it processor speeds, hard drive sizes, or bus speeds. Since the thin client terminals are only displaying applications and data, and not processing or storing data, there is no need to upgrade the client.
Reduced Theft: Unlike traditional PCs, the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 cannot operate unless attached to a host server. Since the unit cannot be used in a typical home environment, there is little temptation for theft.

System Features
Legacy-free platform - USB is a versatile, generational technology intended to offer simple plug and play expansion for all computing devices. USB is faster than the older serial and parallel interfaces. It improves system performance by advancing and streamlining peripheral management. One of the key benefits of the USB standard is the automatic connection and installation of devices without rebooting or reconfiguring the computer. This is also called ² hot plugging.² Through USB, users can quickly and easily connect to a variety of devices and peripherals without being consumed by compatibility and driver issues. USB eliminates the wires and connectors normally found behind most PCs while simultaneously expanding the number of peripherals that can be attached to it. USB ports make it easy to connect printers, cameras, scanners, and more. With USB, the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 offers customers yet another opportunity to work and manage their computing environment more efficiently, reducing the cost of ownership.
Access panel - The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 offers an innovative industrial design allowing users to access a side panel for easy, end-user memory upgrades.
Remote Management for Compaq Thin Clients - Rapport Device Management Software for Compaq T1010, Evo T20 and T30 Thin Clients is an integral part of the HP Thin Client Solution. Administrators can centrally manage their thin client environment and extend the Total Cost of Ownership benefits of their thin client solution. The Compaq Evo T20 Thin Client comes bundled with a Workgroup Edition that can be upgraded to an Enterprise Seat Edition.
