Product Description |
The ProLiant Cluster HA/F500
for Enterprise Virtual Array is a cluster solution made up of a ProLiant
HA/F500 Cluster Kit, high end or high density ProLiant Servers, StorageWorks
Enterprise Virtual Array storage systems, and a Windows cluster capable
operating system. The hardware components are connected by a Fibre Channel
infrastructure. The server nodes are connected together via a dedicated
Ethernet connection for heartbeat monitoring. The Microsoft NT/EE (Enterprise
Edition), Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and Windows Server 2003 operating
system manages the failover at the application level in the case of failure.
Clients are connected to the servers via a network connection, and see the
servers as a single system image. High availability is achieved as the servers in the network take over for each other in the event of hardware or software failure. The ProLiant Cluster HA/F500 for Enterprise Virtual Array can be configured with no-single-points-of-failure. This is accomplished through the use of dual server to storage connectivity (two HBAs per server, two switches and dual RAID controllers in the storage subsystem), and the installation of HP StorageWorks Secure Path software in the servers to manage the HBA failover. The ProLiant Cluster HA/F500 for EVA Enhanced DT solution will support two-node clusters based on Microsoft NT4 EE, two-node clusters based on Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server and two to eight-node clusters based on Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise Server, ProLiant Servers, StorageWorks eva3000 or eva5000 storage subsystem, StorageWorks Continuous Access EVA software, and StorageWorks Secure Path software. This solution combines the fail over functionality of MSCS (Microsoft Cluster Server) with the remote data mirroring functionality of StorageWorks Continuous Access EVA software, and allows for a distance of up to 100 km between the server nodes and up to 100 km between a primary (local) external storage system, and a mirrored (remote) external storage system. The server to storage interconnect is based on fibre channel switch, short and long wave fibre interconnect, and the server to server communication is over Ethernet and/or FDDI connections. The ProLiant Cluster HA/F500 is an integrated
solution that consists of high-end, high-density ProLiant servers, or Data
Center Servers, StorageWorks storage subsystems, and fibre channel server-to-storage-interconnect
hardware and software. This unique combination of highly available server
and storage hardware, redundant connections (for dual path solutions using
the enhanced kit), intelligent management and verification software, and
failover capabilities of the Microsoft Windows Operating System gives the
customer the highest levels of data access and applications available in
the market today. Highly Available Server Hardware High end ProLiant servers incorporate as standard high availability and manageability features such as off-line backup processor, PCI hot plug, redundant hot plug fans, redundant processor power modules, redundant NIC support, hot plug dual port NIC, redundant hot plug power supplies. Redundant connections between server and storage system (for dual path solutions using the enhanced kit) The solution includes dual Fibre Channel switches and dual active/active storage controllers found in the large storage capability of the Enterprise Virtual Array Storage Subsystem for total hardware redundancy in accessing the external storage subsystem. Software included in the cluster kit supports the redundant storage connections, which provide dual HBA (host bus adapters installed in the servers) support with static load balancing. And auto failover in the event of an HBA or Optical link failure. Fail-over capability of MCSC and Microsoft Windows Allows applications to fail-over from one server in the cluster to the next in case of hardware or software failures, including failure of the operating system. Provides for static load balancing between servers for various Windows applications. Maximum Number of Clusters per Storage Controller Pair The ProLiant Cluster HA/F500 for Enterprise Virtual Array now supports a maximum of eight, 2-node clusters per storage controller pair. In Table 1-1 of the ProLiant Cluster HA/F500 for Enterprise Virtual Array Setup and Installation Guide, the maximum number of clusters per storage controller pair is presently shown as four. Highly Available Storage The HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 3000 (eva3000) is the newest addition to the HP StorageWorks V-class Array family that is enabled by VersaStor technology. It is an ultra-high performance, ultra-high capacity and ultra-high availability "virtual" RAID (Vraid) storage solution for the mid-range data center. It removes the time, space and cost boundaries of traditionally architected storage. Though the eva3000 is intended to replace the Modular Array (ma8000) and Enterprise Modular Array (ema 12000 and ema 16000) StorageWorks solutions in the mid-range, it can co-exist in the same 1Gb Open Fibre Channel SAN networks, while providing 2Gb end-to-end Fibre Channel technology in 2Gb Open Fibre Channel SAN networks that complements and extends the current Enterprise solutions. Enterprise Virtual Array 3000 is designed for the data center where there is a critical need for improved storage utilization and scalability while meeting application specific demands for consistently high transaction I/O and MB data rate performance, seamless capacity expansion, instantaneous replication, and simplified storage administration. HP StorageWorks eva3000 is available with two pre-defined configurations with controllers and two FC drive enclosures in graphite 42U cabinet. | 3 Setting Up the ProLiant Servers | |
|
1. Install NICs as necessary if not integrated with the server. Two are
required per server. This document will not cover redundant or fault-tolerant
Ethernet connections. |

| 4 Install Software on the ProLiant Servers | |
| 1. Insert the StorageWorks Windows NT and
2000 Kit CD into the CD drive of the server. Autorun should load the application.
If not, launch install.bat from the root directory of the CD. 2. From the main screen click Perform Fibre Channel Adapter Driver Update to begin the driver update process. In the even that it returns an error regarding no driver to update, load Device Manager and manually update the unknown FCA entries. Simply indicate "Have Disk" and use the driver from the CD. Do not reboot the system when prompted at this time. After both FCAs have been updated, swap back to the kit installation and complete the process. 3. Proceed with Install Fibre Channel Software. After installation completes, allow the system to restart. 4. Check for FCA driver updates at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/ProLiantstorage/adapters/ |

| 5 Setting the IP Addresses for the Fibre Channel Switches | |
| The IP address setting procedures must be performed on every switch in the fabric. Refer to the switch documentation for detailed instructions. | |

| 6 Verifying FCA Firmware | |

Verify that the FCA adapter cards have the correct firmware. Run lputilnt, which is found in WINNT\System32\, and refer to Appendix A in the ProLiant Cluster HA/F500 for Enterprise Virtual Array Setup and Installation Guide for a list of the correct firmware supported. |

| Zoning the Fibre Channel switches is a technique
that allows segmenting ports (based on port ID or WWID of the FCAs) to facilitate
multiple clusters and other isolated storage access. This document will
not cover zoning as the example assumes there is only one EVA and one cluster
on the switches. Please see documentation on the Fibre Channel switches or the ProLiant Cluster HA/F500 for Enterprise Virtual Array Setup and Installation Guide for examples. |

| 8 Install Secure Path |
| Perform the following steps before presenting the disk
drives: 1. Verify the FCA driver version installed on your system. 2. Go to the web site at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/ProLiantstorage/adapters/ and check for the latest Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter driver version supported. IMPORTANT: Skip the following step if you have the latest FCA driver installed on your system. 3. Download the latest FCA driver update utility and install the update utility on each server, one server at a time. |

| 9 Logging onto the Storage System |
| 1. Log in to
the management appliance from any network browser. User name=administrator Password=administrator 2. Select Resource Manager, Element Manager, HSG Element Manager to launch the HSG Element Manager. |

| 10 Creating the Storage System and Virtual Disks | ||
| 1. Initialize the storage with a descriptive name. | ||
| 2. Enter a license key if the management appliance requests one. | ||
| 3. Configure
disk groups. Decide how to configure the disk groups during the initialization
process. Choose to create either multiple disk groups or a single disk group. IMPORTANT: HP requires that a disk group contain no fewer than eight disks. The HSG Element Manager default is four disks. Do not use this default. You must specify at least eight disks. | ||
| 4. Set the storage system time. | ||
| 5. Add the hosts to the storage system: | ||
| a.
Select Hosts. b. Click Add a Host. c. Enter a host name. d. Enter the correct IP address. IMPORTANT: If the wrong IP address is entered and saved at the end of this procedure, it cannot be changed without deleting and recreating the host. e. Click Next Step. f. Enter an adapter port Worldwide Name. Use the information in the worksheet in Appendix B of the HA/F500 setup and installation guide to correctly identify which FCA card is located in each server or use the lputilnt utility. Select the correct Worldwide Name from the list. g. Select Windows as the operating system. h. Click Next Step. i. Click Finish, OK. j. Click Add a Port. k. Select the second FCA from the list. l. Click Finish, OK. m. Repeat steps a through l for the second host. | ||
| 6. Create the virtual disk drives: | ||
| a.
Select Virtual Disks. b. Click Create VD Fam. c. Assign the virtual disk name. d. Select a Vraid. e. Select the correct Prefer path/mode. Path A-Failover only or Path B-Failover only are the only options supported for clustering. Set a preferred controller for each virtual disk drive for load balancing. f. Click Finish, OK. g. Repeat steps a through f to create the necessary virtual disks needed according to the number of LUNs you will have. | ||
| 7. Present the virtual disk drives to both of the hosts in the cluster: | ||
| a.
Select a physical disk. b. Click Present. c. Select a host. d. Click Finish, OK. e. Click Present. f. Select the second host. g. Click Finish, OK. h. Verify that the presented hosts are on the same LUN number. i. Select another physical disk and repeat steps a through h until all the virtual disks in the cluster are presented to the hosts. | ||

| 11 Installing Secure Path | |
| 1. Install StorageWorks Secure Path using
the latest kit. Follow the on screen instructions. 2. Configure the host in Secure Path to reflect both servers. 3. Restart the servers. 4. Install Secure Path 4.0C for Windows. 5. Restart the servers. 6. Go to Computer Management, Device Manager, if you have a Windows operating system, and verify under Disk drives that all the drives were discovered. There should be twice the number of drives that were presented to the hosts. |

| 12 Configuring Virtual Disks on the Host | |
| 1. Power down one server. 2. Use Disk Management or Disk Administrator and configure the newly discovered drives: - Windows 2000 Disk type (Basic only), partition, NTFS format, and assign disk drive letters. - Windows Server 2003 - Windows NT Partition, NTFS format, and assign disk drive letters. 3. Power down the first server. 4. Power up the second server to verify that all the disk drives are seen correctly. Verify that both servers see the drives identically; in the same sequence. |

| 13 Installing Cluster Software | |
| 1. Shut down one of the nodes. 2. Install clustering on the first node. 3. Power up the second server. 4. Install clustering on the second node and have it join the existing cluster. IMPORTANT: For Windows NT only, reinstall SP6a on both servers after installing clustering. 5. Install your applications. |
