ProLiant Essentials Workload Management Pack v2.0

Featuring: Resource Partitioning Manager v2.0

The ProLiant Essentials Workload Management Pack (WMP) is a software solution that controls and dynamically allocates system resources to enable application consolidation and performance optimization on Windows® 2000 server platforms bringing maximum utilization, lower total cost of ownership, and improved availability IT environments. WMP provides the tools you need to safely consolidate applications or optimize performance. With the WMP software, Resource Partitioning Manager v2.0, you configure resource partitions, application boundaries defined by their allocated quantity of processor and memory resources. Each partition enjoys access to specific, limited processor and memory resources. Limited access means that resources are available for your applications when they need them. Limited access also means no more worries about decreased availability created by memory-leaking applications.
Resource Partitioning Manager is installed on the managed server and can be accessed both directly from that server and from other networked servers running RPM.
Within Resource Partitioning Manager, there are four basic functions: Create Resource Partitions, Assign Processes, Define Rules, and Evaluate Configuration and Performance.

  • Create Resource Partitions: An administrator creates the resource partitions on a target server by establishing a name and defining which processors and what amount of memory the partition will include.
  • Assign Processes: An administrator chooses which executables, DLL's and services will run within the resource partition. In doing so, the administrator ensures that these processes will use only the assigned partition resources.
  • Define Rules: A Dynamic Rules Engine creates flexibility in the amount of resources available to each partition. The administrator can use the engine to establish rules that allow objects to dynamically increase or decrease processor and memory resources as needed.
  • Evaluate Configuration and Performance: Allocation, utilization, and performance graphs give administrators quick performance information and feedback.

What's New
  • Effective July 9, 2007, HP will no longer offer the Workload Management Pack. This product has been discontinued.

Standard Features

Benefits
  • Maximize return on server investments by increasing utilization of available system resources – For each server in an environment, there is an opportunity cost associated with unutilized capacity. Workload Management Pack makes it possible t o use idle capacity without compromising application availability and performance.
  • Minimize server management costs – With Workload Management Pack, Windows 2000 administrators no longer have to manage an additional server for each additional application; multiple applications can run effectively on a single server, reducing monthly management costs and application licensing costs.
  • Improve availability by controlling misbehaved applications – Partitioning misbehaved applications and limiting those applications to the resources within their respective partitions protects other applications from their unpredictable nature.
  • Deliver processor and memory resources on demand whenever they are needed, improving application performance during heavy workloads – The Workload Management Pack gives control over not only how resources are allocated, but when resources are allocated. Each resource partition has rules associated with it. These rules can be used to automate changes to the partition based on utilization or time of day.

Product Features
Partition Configuration Wizard
Quickly group processes, allocate resources, and assign applications to resource partitions

Dynamic Rules Engine
Establish rules that provide flexibility to automatically add or remove resources without user intervention.

Resource Allocation Graphs
Quickly view resource allocation and utilization.

System and Partition Performance Graphs
Quickly view processor, memory, and I/O performance data.

Easy to Use GUI
Minimize the time needed to train administrators and staff on how to manage workloads and configure the server.

Automated Partition Reboot
Manual reboot is no longer required for memory-leaking applications. RPM v2.0 can be configured to automatically reboot partitions when memory utilization exceeds a pre-defined threshold.

Partition Based ChartingKey processor, memory, disk, and I/O data is now presented in an easy-to-view graphical format.

Usage and Performance ReportingRPM continually captures and stores information on the resource utilization and performance of your partitions. Export the data to your favorite reporting tool for departmental billing or print reports directly from RPM.

TrendingRPM v2.0 now analyzes utilization data over time to characterize partition performance trends.

Command Line InterfaceA new command line interface can be used to customize functions such as partition activation/deactivation, target server selection, or activation/deactivation of the RPM service itself.

Time-based RulesWith RPM v2.0, the dynamic rules engine can make automatic changes to partition configurations based on either utilization or specific dates and times.

Customer Usage Scenarios
  • Server Consolidation – ProLiant customers who are currently deploying one application instance per server can consolidate multiple applications onto a single server running Windows 2000, consolidating the computing environment and reducing management costs.
  • Enhanced Clustering – Customers whose environments include active-passive cluster configurations can use Resource Partitioning Manager Landing Zones to reserve resources for application fail-over on an active target server.
  • Improved Availability – Resource Partitioning Manager can protect against memory leaks in a Windows 2000 environment by allowing the customer to place applications in their own independent resource partitions.
  • Enhanced Performance – Resource partitions can be used to ensure that resources are available to applications when they need them, ensuring that applications continue to perform, maintaining the service levels that customers expect.
