Overview

48X/12X/48X CD-RW Drive

The 48X/12X/48X CD-RW Drive is an exceptional solution for creating CDs, archiving permanent data files on CD-R media, transferring presentations via CD-R or CD-RW media, backing up valuable data, and updating frequently-used data via CD-RW media. The 48X-write speed of this CD-RW drive is among the industry's fastest; users can record an 80-minute CD with CD-R media in less than four minutes. With a maximum read speed comparable to top CD-ROM drives, the 48X/12X/48X CD-RW Drive eliminates the need for an additional CD-ROM drive. The 48X/12X/48X CD-RW Drive also features Buffer Management technology, designed to bridge minor interruptions in the data stream caused by buffer underruns during recording.

Performance
The 48X/12X/48X CD-RW drive can write data for CD-R and CD-RW discs while at the same time functioning as a CD-ROM drive. The drive features 48X speed for CD-R writing, 12X speed for CD-RW writing, and 48X speed for CD-ROM reading. Leveraging the drive's Buffered Audio Playback technology CD-audio tracks can be played through the audio channel and audio line output. The 48X/12X/48X CD-RW Drive automatically adjusts speeds to the quality of the disc used at any given time.

Key Benefits
  • 48X drive speed enables high-speed data transfer
  • Data capacity up to 700 MB with 80 minute media
  • Sealed construction to prevent dust contamination
  • Powered tray disc-loading mechanism
  • 2-MB read-ahead data buffer
  • Horizontal or vertical operation
  • Power-saving modes that trigger during periods of inactivity
  • Anti-buffer underrun technology compensates for temporary interruptions in write data

Buffer underruns occur when a computer is unable to transfer data to the recorder (data stream) fast enough to keep the recorder's buffer full. Many factors can affect the data stream, slowing it down or interrupting it completely.
CD recording requires a continuous, uninterrupted data stream during the entire write process of a CD-R disc. Successful CD recording occurs only when the flow of data from its source (hard disk, CD-ROM drive, network, etc.) to the recorder is at least as fast as the selected recording speed. In other words, the data must flow in a steady, uninterrupted stream. All CD recorders have internal buffer memory that temporarily stores data during recording, acting as a ²buffer² against slowdowns in the data stream. The buffer stores a small amount of data that continues to feed the recorder until the flow of data from the source resumes. If an interruption lasts long enough to empty the buffer, a buffer underrun occurs.
Buffer management technology in the 48X CD-RW Drive compensates for buffer underrun errors that would otherwise render the CD unusable due to a failure during recording. If a buffer underrun occurs during data transfers while this feature is enabled, the drive will temporarily stop burning, wait until the internal buffer fills with data, and then continue to burn the CD without any apparent interruption to the user.

Dantz Retrospect Express Backup Automatic Backup Software

Take the drudgery out of backing up while providing a safe environment for important files. Instead of manually dragging files from a hard drive to storage media, Retrospect Express provides intelligent personal backup based on a user-defined schedule. Retrospect is simple to set up and run-the EasyScript setup wizard creates a complete backup strategy and begins your first backup in only minutes.
Using Retrospect Express Backup's built-in compression feature, which shrinks files as they are backed up, media costs can be lowered. Retrospect's IncrementalPLUSä technology supports new- and changed-file backups to multiple media sets, providing additional safety and saving time. If disaster strikes, lost work is recovered in minutes by restoring a single file or an entire hard disk in one easy step. Retrospect Express Backup takes a Snapshot from each backup session to ensure that every document, preference, configuration, application, registry entry and font will always be completely and exactly restored.

Compatibility
The 48X/12X/48X CD-RW Drive is compatible with Compaq Evo D300 series PCs, the D500 Convertible Minitower and Small Form Factor and Compaq Evo workstations.

Service and Support
