Systems

Step 1 - Assess Application Requirements

  • Selection of system components must be made in the context of total application requirements. Although the configuration of system components must be done in steps (for example, base system, CPUs, memories, etc.), these steps should not be done in isolation.
  • The order in which requirements are assessed is also important, since one requirement may impact others. Before proceeding, it would be useful to assess the total application requirements in the following order:
  • What level of availability is required?
    • If no single points of failure are allowed, then the solution should be configured as a multi-system cluster.
    • If access to specific devices must be assured, consider redundant adapters, RAID, redundant I/O Expansion Drawers, etc.
  • What overall capacities are required in terms of performance, memory capacity, and disk storage?
  • How should the system be configured to optimize performance?
    • In most cases, optimum performance is achieved if the system resources (CPUs, memory and I/O adapters) are balanced across the System Building Blocks in the system.
    • Memory should be configured according to application guidelines listed in Step 4.
  • What are the near-term system expansion needs?
NOTE: Most configuration steps require that the above data be considered in whole or in part. Be sure to execute each step in the context of the total application requirements.

Configuration Requirements for GS1280 Partitions

Configuring partitions requires some attention to detail with respect to minimum requirements for option selection, population, and option placement.

  • A single AlphaServer GS1280 can be divided into logical hardware partitions, as small as two processors, each running an instance of Tru64 UNIX or an instance of OpenVMS. Each partition is allocated its own dedicated "shared-nothing" set of hardware resources: CPU module(s), memory module(s), and I/O.
  • Each hardware partition is viewed as a unique node, from a system point-of-view, with its own instance of Tru64 UNIX or OpenVMS operating system and application software, independent system console, and error log.
  • Partition boundaries cannot separate two CPUs on the same Dual CPU Building Block Module.
  • Supported option rules apply for maximum configurations of each AlphaServer GS1280 system partition. Care must be exercised to ensure that any planned reconfiguration of hardware partitions will not violate option support rules.
  • Multiple hard partitions within a GS1280 server may not provide complete hardware failure isolation across hard partitions. Hard partitions at the 8P Building Block Drawer level within the server do provide hardware failure isolation.

All systems require the following minimum firmware revisions to run hard partitions:

  • Minimum Firmware console rev: V6.5-8
  • Tru64 UNIX: V5.1b + Patch kit - T64V51BB22AS0002-20030415.tar
  • OpenVMS: V7.3-1 + TIMA Kits
    DEC-AVPVMS-VMS731_PARTITIONING-V0199—4.PCSI and AVPVMS-VMS731_PARTITIONING-V0100_cVRLET and AVPVMS-VMS731_PARTITIONING-V0100_SUBFORM
    available at http://h18003.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/gs1280/gs1280_tech.html
NOTE: Additional partitioning information is available at
http://h18003.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/gs1280/gs1280_tech.html

Minimum Hardware Required per AlphaServer GS1280 Hardware Partition

  • One AlphaServer GS1280, Dual CPU Building Block
  • Two memory modules, one for each CPU
  • One I/O Master Building Block Drawer and one I/O cable (see Step 5a)
  • One system disk drive

AlphaServer GS1280 systems are normally configured according to standard module placement rules, and are shipped with one copy of the operating system installed at the factory (Tru64 UNIX or OpenVMS). However, systems with hardware partitions offer hardware and software configuration flexibility. Factory integration services (VIS) are recommended to enable custom module configuration and factory installation of multiple copies of the operating system on hardware- partitioned systems.

  • Each partition must have a minimum amount of memory: 16 MB per each CPU in the partition + the minimum supported by the O/S.
  • For example: On a GS1280 Model 16 divided into two hard partitions, each with one System Building Block per each hard partition: 8 x 16 MB + O/S memory = 128 MB + O/S memory
  • Each CPU that has I/O attached to it must have memory

System Software Required for AlphaServer GS1280 Hardware Partition Support - Software Licensing for Hardware Partitions

  • Base systems include an operating system license (Tru64 UNIX or OpenVMS) that licenses all hardware partitions up to the physical limit of the base system package: e.g., four hardware partitions for Model 8 systems, eight partitions for Model 16 systems.
  • User and capacity-based licensing is unaffected by hardware partitions. Examples:
  • If a product is licensed for 200 concurrent users, these users can be split among the partitions, but cannot exceed 200
    total users.
  • If users have an enterprise capacity license for a product, that license can be loaded into the license databases on each of the hardware partitions.

Licensing AlphaServer GS1280 Systems for Both OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX

Systems require licenses for both OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX operating systems, either for dual O/S boot of the entire system or for different operating systems in separate hard partitions. One operating system license is included in the base system and the second is added as a line item. The second operating system license upgrade would be added to the order using the following part numbers. Order appropriate media and documentation kits from Step 16.

- OpenVMS software upgrade for GS1280

QB-63PAQ-AC

- Tru64 UNIX software upgrade for GS1280

QB-595AN-AB
  • Only those SMP processors intended for use with the second operating system must be similarly licensed. Use the following license-only part numbers to add an SMP license for any CPUs intended for use with the second operating system:

- OpenVMS Alpha dual SMP license for GS1280

QL-MT1A9-6T

- Tru64 UNIX Alpha dual SMP license for GS1280

QL-MT4A9-6T
  • The order of licensing is not important, but the following examples are similarly constructed for clarity. The configuration starts with a Tru64 UNIX base system part number and the addition of OpenVMS licenses.

Example 1: 16-CPU GS1280 system in which all processors are licensed for both OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX:

  • Base system order would include one DA-1280A-BA and eight 3X-KN72C-AB dual CPU Building Blocks
  • Add one QB-63PAQ-AC OpenVMS Software Upgrade and eight QL-MT1A9-6T OpenVMS Alpha dual SMP licenses

Example 2: 16-CPU GS1280 system in which all the processors are licensed for Tru64 UNIX and eight processors are also licensed for OpenVMS:

  • Base system order would include one DA-1280A-BA and eight 3X-KN72C-AB dual CPU Building Blocks
  • Add one QB-63PAQ-AC OpenVMS software upgrade and four QL-MT1A9-6T OpenVMS Alpha dual SMP licenses
  • User and capacity-based licenses would be added for the second operating system environment as though it were a standalone system.

Example 3: 16-CPU GS1280 system in which eight processors are licensed for Tru64 UNIX and eight processors are also licensed for OpenVMS:

  • Base system order would include one DA-1280A-BA and four 3X-KN72C-AB dual CPU Building Blocks
  • Add one QB-63PAQ-AC OpenVMS software upgrade and four 3X-KN72C-AC dual CPU OpenVMS Alpha Building Blocks
  • User and capacity-based licenses would be added for the second operating system environment as though it were a standalone system.

Options

Step 4 - Select Memory Options

Memory Configuration Guidelines
Memory options should be selected in the context of the application's sensitivity to memory bandwidth and future memory expansion. This will determine the number of memory options to order. The total capacity required will determine the size of the options to be ordered.

Mandatory selection of at least two memory options per CPU Building Block Module ordered in Step 3.

  • Each GS1280 Model 8 system can support up to 16 memory options (four RIMMs each) and up to 16 memory RAID options (one RIMM each) for a total of 80 RIMMs when configured with 8 CPUs.
  • Each GS1280 Model 16 system can support up to 32 memory options and up to 32 memory RAID options for a total of 160 RIMMs when configured with 16 CPUs.
  • Each CPU has two memory controllers - Each memory controller can support four RIMMs (one memory option) and a fifth RIMM slot for redundancy (RAID option).
  • If populated, the two memory controllers per CPU must contain the same size RIMMs.
  • Order one RAID option (one RIMM) per memory option if desired.
    • If RAID memory is selected, the number of RAID options must equal the number of memory options selected.

The following examples illustrate different ways of configuring a GS1280 Model 8 with four CPUs with a total of 4-GB of memory.

Memory Application Examples

Configuring memory is a compromise between cost, total memory capacity, and memory bandwidth requirements. The behavior of the application must be used to define the most-desired configuration. Some applications are sensitive to memory capacity, some are sensitive to memory bandwidth, some are sensitive to neither. If actual application measurements are not available, the following may be used as guidelines:

  • Large memory (VLM) applications, in which large amounts of memory can substantially reduce I/O throughput, may be optimized for total memory capacity and future capacity growth. In VLM applications, the right balance might be one memory option per CPU. (Case B)
  • Typical commercial applications, such as transaction processing (OLTP) and multi-user timesharing, usually operate efficiently from cache and may not be materially affected by memory bandwidth. Memory configuration is a balance between memory bandwidth and future capacity growth. It is advisable to match the number of options to the number of CPUs. (Case B)
  • Data mining can benefit from additional memory bandwidth. It is best to match the number of memory base modules to the number of CPUs. (Case A)
  • The most demanding high-performance technical applications achieve a performance level that is directly proportional to memory bandwidth. In these cases, configure two memory options per CPU. (Case A)

Step 5 - Configure Packaging Options

Step 5a - System I/O Expansion

I/O Configuration Guidelines:

  • Each AlphaServer GS1280 system requires one I/O Master Building Block Drawer per system or hard partition. Additional I/O Building Block Drawers are optional.
  • Each CPU in a GS1280 System Building Block Drawer can provide one I/O connection to an I/O Drawer.
    • Each AlphaServer GS1280 system Model 8 supports up to 8 I/O connections per system or hard partition.
    • Each AlphaServer GS1280 system Model 16 supports up to 16 I/O connections per system or hard partition.
  • Either a Standard I/O Drawer or High Performance I/O Drawer can be used as the Master or for additional expansion. Any combination of drawers is supported up to the I/O connection limit.
    • The Standard I/O Drawer requires one I/O connection
    • The High Performance I/O Drawer requires one and optionally up to four connections

Example GS1280 Model 8:
4 Standard I/O Drawers, 1 I/O connection each = 4 connections
2 High Performance I/O Drawers, 2 I/O connections each = 4 connections
Total I/O connections = 8 connections

  • Each Master I/O Building Block Drawer has a Combination USB/Ultra3 SCSI Adapter, in one slot, which provides an Ultra3 SCSI connection for two disks and a CD-RW device in the drawer; plus a USB connection for keyboard, mouse, and monitor. If the final system configuration does not require these I/O devices, the Combination USB/Ultra3 SCSI Adapter may be removed and replaced with these alternatives:
  • Disk Access for System Boot - External storage access or network boot can be used in place of the disk storage internal to the I/O Drawer.
  • Software Load - Software can be loaded over the network from a disk on another system or directly from a CD reader attached to another system by using remote mount.
  • User I/O - User access via a network connection can be used in place of the direct connection via the USB port.

Standard I/O Drawer

  • Each Standard I/O Drawer requires one I/O connection to a CPU in a GS1280 System Building Block Drawer
  • Standard I/O Expansion Drawers contain 11 PCI/PCI-X slots and one AGP slot; and an N+1 redundant power system
  • Standard I/O Master Drawers consist of a Standard I/O Drawer plus a combination USB/Ultra3 SCSI adapter (occupies one PCI slot), a CD-RW drive, and two Ultra3 SCSI hot-plug disk drive bays (disk drives are NOT included, they must be ordered separately)
  • Standard I/O Drawers are connected to a GS1280 System Building Block Drawer utilizing a 3X-BNPSA-xx cable

AlphaServer GS1280 Model 8 - Internal System Expansion Options

AlphaServer GS1280 Model 16 - Internal System Expansion Options

Step 7 - Power Distribution Units/Power Options

Power Distribution Units
  • Power supplies included with Model 8 and Model 16 systems can support all combinations of CPUs, memory, and I/O that can be configured within the system boxes and include N+1 power redundancy
  • Mandatory selection of one 30A or 32A Power Distribution Unit (AC power option) required for each GS1280 Model 8 system ordered
  • Mandatory selection of two 30A or 32A Power Distribution Units (AC power option) required for each GS1280 Model 16 system ordered (does not provide dual AC functionality)

  120/208V Y or 200V, 30A NEMA L21-30P plug 3 x C19 outlets plus 24 x C13 outlets
3X-H7606-AA
  380/415V Y, IEC 309 32A 6h/230/400~ plug 3 x C19 outlets plus 24 x C13 outlets
3X-H7606-AB

Dual AC Power Options for GS1280 Model 8 and Model 16 Systems
  • A dual AC power option provides the capability to connect to two separate AC feeds: a primary AC feed and a secondary AC feed. The feeds can be direct from the power utility, or they can be a combination of utility feeds and UPS or generator feeds. The preferred (primary) feed is determined by the user. In the event of failure of the primary feed, the system will automatically transfer the load to the secondary feed without power interruption.
    - The dual AC power options can be factory configured or installed as a field upgrade.
    - The dual AC power option for the GS1280 Model 8 requires one additional Geography-specific PDU be ordered; the Model 16 Dual AC option requires two additional PDUs. The dual AC options do NOT include Power Distribution Units (PDUs). They must be ordered separately (3X-H7606-AA/AB - see above).
  • There are two dual AC options available for the GS1280, one for the Model 8 and one for the Model 16.
  • The dual-AC power option for GS1280 Model 8 systems consists of the following component types:
    - One power shelf with three power regulators (N+1)
    - One dual AC assembly with two cables
    - The dual AC assemblies for the Model 8 can be mounted in a single cabinet configuration
  • The dual AC power option for GS1280 Model 16 systems consists of the following component types:
    - Two power shelves with three power regulators each (N+1)
    - Two dual AC assemblies with four cables
    - The dual AC assemblies for the Model 16 requires that a second cabinet
(3X-H9A45-ZA Expansion Cabinet) be mounted adjacent to the system power cabinet – see Step 8 for ordering external expansion cabinet

Step 14 - MEMORY CHANNEL

  • Up to two PCI-to-System Area Network adapters (CCMAB-BA) are supported in a single system.
  • Each PCI-to-System Area Network adapter must be the only device on the PCI/PCI-X bus segment.
  • Two-node clusters can be configured by ordering a CCMAB-BA for each node and one BN39B-04 or BN39B-10 cable, cable connects directly to CCMAB-BA in each node.
  • For a two-node cluster that will not need to be rebooted when adding additional members, order one CCMAB-BA adapter and one BN39B-04 or BN39B-10 cable for each node and one CCMHB-AA hub for the cluster.
  • For three or four node clusters, order one CCMAB-BA adapter and one BN39B-04 or BN39B-10 cable for each node and one CCMHB-AA hub for the cluster.
  • CCMHB-AA includes four CCMLB-AA line cards and supports up to four nodes; expansion up to eight system nodes can be achieved by adding up to four CCMLB-AA line cards.
  • If two CCMAB-BAs are configured in each system, a second CCMHB-AA is required.
  • If nodes must be separated by a distance longer than standard copper cables allow the CCMFB option converts the output of the standard CCMAB controller or CCMLB line card to single-mode fiber optic cable. The fiber optic connection may be up to 2,000 meters long between two CCMAB controllers connected in virtual hub mode, or 3,000 meters between a CCMAB controller and a CCMHB hub. (The connection from the CCMHB hub to a second system may also be 3,000 meters.) The CCMFB option requires a second PCI slot in the system from which it draws power only. It is normally connected to the corresponding CCMAB controller with the short BN39B-01 cable. The CCMFB is also used in the CCMHB hub where it occupies a slot normally used by the CCMLB line card, limiting expansion to four radial fiber optic connections.
  • CCMHB-BA hub expansion box provides additional slots for up to eight fiber optic connections. Two standard length single-mode fiber optic cables are available (BN34R-10 and BN34R-31); however, users normally provide this fiber optic connection. Fiber optic connectivity is completely transparent to the systems using it and has no performance impact.

Tru64 UNIX (V5.1B)
  • Each system node in the cluster requires a TruCluster software license
(QL-6BRAQ-AA) or TruCluster Plus Software Package (QP-6R9AQ-AA)

OpenVMS (V7.3-1)
  • OpenVMS V7.3-1 and OpenVMS Cluster License (QL-MUZAE-AA) and required
