LifeKeeper for Linux Storage Overview
| LifeKeeper for Linux Storage | LifeKeeper for Linux utilizes both internal
storage and external storage for cluster operations. Internal storage is used in Replicated Storage clusters where application data is written to target volumes on another server's internal disk storage. Replicated storage is used for very small clusters or where cost is a major consideration. As in all LifeKeeper for Linux clusters, both servers in this configuration can be active with application data being shared between the two servers with each server backing up the other. This configuration is designed for small retail or point of sale environments where small data transactions are utilized. In this configuration, each server's application writes across the private network to the other server's internal storage. In the event of a server failure, the remaining server will restart the failed server's application and recover the failed server's volumes and continue application processing. When the failed server returns to service, the updated data volume will be synchronized on the returning server. This Replicated Data configuration is subject to a point of failure when the data synchronization process is underway and does not complete which leaves the returning server in an unknown state. We look at this configuration as a low end proof of concept cluster to develop and then migrate to shared storage as needed. We recommend the ML310, ML330 and ML350 for this type of cluster where data is usually on internal drives to save money for an external storage device like the Smart Array Cluster Storage system. An externally shared SCSI configuration provides added levels of data security and integrity over the Mirrored SCSI configuration. Two servers can attach using ProLiant Smart Array 5i, ProLiant Smart Array 5i+, or Smart Array 532 controllers to the Smart Array Cluster Storage system, which is externally powered and equipped with redundant power, cooling and I/O controllers for added availability. This configuration allows Active/Passive and Active/Active failover configurations. This configuration allows both servers to write to the shared SCSI system and in the event of a server failure, the application is restarted, data recovered and application processing continues. When the failed server is brought back into service, the application can be transferred back either automatically or manually based on individual user preference. Shared SCSI clusters have been the home of the DL380 Packaged Clusters that are the ideal products for this space, where limited storage two node clusters are used. Now with the external Smart Array Cluster Storage system certified for the DL360, ML370, DL380, and DL580, it extends this shared SCSI solution. This solution is ideal for SMB or departmental operations where up to 2TB of storage is adequate for operations use and only two servers are required; for example in store processing for back end store operations or departmental application processing, such as banking, manufacturing, small ASP sites, or where any general purpose computing application is needed. Linux supports a full range of back office applications as well and LifeKeeper for Linux supports the Linux back office products with SteelEye Technology Application Recovery Kits for Apache, an IIS competitor; Samba, a File and Print competitor, Sendmail, an Exchange competitor, as well as Oracle, DB2, MYSQL, PostgresSQL Database offerings. It also supports SAP ERP, CRM applications. LifeKeeper for Linux supports from 2 to 16 servers in a shared fibre configuration. This allows for RA4100, MSA1000, and MA8000 clusters to support more sophisticated failover and data consolidation cluster configurations. For mid-range applications, where node count and storage scalability is important, LifeKeeper supports the legacy RA4100 and the successor MSA1000. We support up to 16 nodes with common attachability to single path fibre storage and sharing across all nodes and applications. This configuration type will really start to take advantage of LifeKeeper functionality and operations. Cluster configurations can become very sophisticated with applications cascading across all servers or load balanced as they start up and are assigned to a specific node(s). Load balancing can be achieved via test scripts to determine primary or secondary server availability at time of start up. The shared fibre configurations offer the most flexibility for sophisticated configurations and scalability. Configuration growth can be seamless by adding servers and storage without bringing the cluster down as well as adding some configuration options not available with the two-node mirrored SCSI or external shared SCSI. |
