ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack - Linux Edition Release 1.30

Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP) is a complete deployment solution for HP ProLiant servers. RDP automates the process of deploying and provisioning server software, enabling companies to quickly and easily adapt to changing business demands. RDP combines an off-the shelf version of Altiris Deployment Solution with a ProLiant Integration Module (PIM). The PIM consists of software optimizations for ProLiant Servers which include the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit, configuration jobs for industry-standard operating systems, sample unattended files, and ProLiant Support Packs that include software drivers, management agents, and important documentation. Altiris Deployment Solution provides a web-based management console that has an intuitive user interface making deployment of a server or multiple servers easy and consistent. Deploying servers can be done through Altiris' imaging feature or through scripting using the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit.

RDP is available in either a Windows Edition or a Linux Edition. The Linux Edition is hosted on a Linux server and is intended for homogeneous Linux environment deploying only Linux systems. The Windows Edition (see separate QuickSpecs document) is hosted on a Windows server and is intended for heterogeneous environments deploying both Windows and Linux systems.

Product Features

Provides instant out-of-the-box functionality for the ProLiant ML and DL 300, 500 and 700 Series servers and the ProLiant BL blade servers.
Provides a fast, easy, point-and-click solution for deploying standard server configurations and software builds in an automated fashion from a remote console:

  • Simplifies automated server deployment allowing companies to rapidly respond to changing workloads.
  • Establishes virtual presence and control for server deployments and redeployments within the data center or at remote locations, eliminating the need for IT personnel to be physically present.

The ProLiant Integration Module (PIM) integrates essential HP Support Software

  • Includes the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit, providing the foundation for standard server configuration scripts.
  • The PIM provides latest versions of the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit, HP optimized drivers and management agents along with HP supplied deployment jobs and scripts pre-loaded in the RDP console.
  • HP supplied deployment jobs and scripts, using SmartStart technology, maximize productivity with instant out-of-the-box functionality - automating the process of server configuration and software deployment - driving world-class levels of IT efficiency and decreasing the Total Cost of Ownership.
  • Operating system integration is a snap with HP supplied configuration events for Linux further simplifying the initial OS deployment and driver integration steps all in an automated fashion.

Unique Features for ProLiant BL servers

  • Designed for blade servers - Rapid Deployment Pack is the deployment solution of choice for the ProLiant BL line of servers.
  • Enables rapid serviceability with Rip and Replace features. Pre-failure alerts enable proactive replacement of blade servers for service. New blades automatically assume personality of previous server based on location.
  • Blade servers are easy to identify by physical location in racks - blades are displayed with easy to understand icons of rack, enclosure, bay.
  • With Virtual Rack, Enclosure, Bay features, users can now assign an event to be executed the first time a blade is inserted into the bay. The user will have the ability to create a virtual enclosure and its associated virtual bays via a console interface and the ability to associate a single event with the bays of the enclosure when they are created.

Deployment Infrastructure Components
The infrastructure components required to use the RDP include a deployment server, a DHCP server, a PXE server, a database server, and a file server. For a simple deployment infrastructure, the functionality of all these servers can be combined into one physical server.
  • The deployment server is the central repository which includes a file share, a database and PXE server.
  • The file share stores scripts, configurations, your operating system, ProLiant server software files and disk images that you may use to deploy a server.
  • A database server (PostgreSQL), stores server profiles and hardware/software inventory. The database server logs all configuration activities that occur with the deployment server.
  • The PXE server provides the functionality to boot a remote server over the network.
  • A DHCP server is required if you intend to using PXE to perform server deployments. The DHCP server assigns temporary IP addresses to the server you are deploying.

Service & Support
HP Services provides the knowledge and expertise to quickly install and configure HP ProLiant servers. We then follow up with the comprehensive support, training, and guidance you need. The primary goal of these services is to get your servers up and running efficiently, 24x7, with minimal effect on in-house resources. By relying on HP technical experts, you take the worry and risk out of server deployment-while saving time and money. Rapid Deployment Pack Support Services provide cost-effective, reliable installation, support, and technical training. And they give your IT staff the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to more effectively manage your server environment.

HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack Support Services cover four phases:
  • Installation and startup
  • Implementation
  • Software Support
  • Education

Installation and Startup This service provides installation and startup of the HP Rapid Deployment Pack software on a customer-supplied HP ProLiant server. HP will install the ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack software and provide a practical demonstration of the product by using it to deploy an image to a single server. The new server will be deployed using one of the preconfigured scripts provided by HP or by using an image from an existing ProLiant server at your location. This service also provides for the capture and storage of the newly deployed server's configuration on a storage device.
For more information: http://www.hp.com/go/rdp-services

Implementation The Implementation service assesses your current server environment, provides pre-installation planning, and manages the implementation of RDP software.

This service is available in two versions:

  • Basic service: This service provides for the implementation of HP Rapid Deployment Pack and the deployment of images on up to five HP ProLiant target servers located at a single site. This service can be purchased in a convenient Care Pack
  • Custom service: This service provides for custom installation of HP Rapid Deployment Pack based on a statement of work developed by HP and the customer.

As part of the implementation process, an HP services specialist verifies that the deployed images are fully operational. Once verification has been completed, your IT staff receives an orientation on product usage and deployment management.

Customer Usage Scenarios
Usage Scenario 1
Customers deploying 50+ ProLiant servers per year are looking for automated, unattended ways to get their servers up and running as quickly as possible. Fewer IT resources are required when using RDP for high volume server deployment; this enables IT resources to be redeployed to other important tasks.

Usage Scenario 2
Customers looking for a simpler way to manage multi-server deployments: The Altiris Deployment Solution with the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit provides a fast, easy, point-and-click solution for deploying and maintaining standard server software configurations. This solution provides a method for deploying servers from a remote console. The console provides an easy view of server configurations and servers that have been deployed, easy management and deployment of imaging or scripting events and most importantly a point-and-click method for deploying servers.

Usage Scenario 3 Early adopters of latest technology will find the RDP useful in their data centers. The ideal customer is looking for advanced deployment methods that take advantage of booting over the network with PXE, and sophisticated imaging and scripting technology.
