Product Highlights

Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT) Technology

AIT drive employs a helical scan recording style in which data tracks are written at an angle relative to the edge of the tape. This provides higher density recording, enabling HP customers to lower costs and increase efficiency by storing more data on a single tape.

Memory-In-Cassette (MIC)AIT technology features Memory-In-Cassette (MIC) a 64-Kb memory chip built into the data cartridge which speeds access to your data. The MIC chip provides sophisticated data access capability that allows users to load and unload the tape at the mid-point, which helps in locating files in seconds.

Disaster Recovery - DRTape

The AIT tape drives have been improved with the added feature of DRTape. DRTape insures that in case of a system failure, you will be able to restore your system from a single tape.
What is Disaster Recovery: An AIT Tape Drive that can:

  • Under Disaster Recovery (DR) situations, ID itself as a boot device
  • Hold enough information to bring the system up for a DR restore from tape
  • Is completely self-contained in that it needs no other software or CD's to restore the system.

NOTE: DR not supported on hot plug tape configuration.

HP Data Protection Tools

Each HP tape drive is supported with multiple software applications and utilities that allow users to easily integrate and maintain their HP backup solutions. Software tools such as Tape Storage Management Console and Insight Manager are available via web download from the HP.com website. Additional product information tools such as technology White Papers, sizing tools and Service Advisories can also be accessed through the following Web site:
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/tapestorage.html.

Backward Read CompatibleBackward read compatibility with AIT 35 GB, AIT 50 GB and AIT 100 GB tape drives.

Hot Plug
  • Able to mix tape drives and hard drives on the same SCSI Bus without slowing down the performance of the system.
  • Supported on Smart Array 5300 Controller family, Smart Array 5i Plus Controller, Smart Array 532 Controllers, Smart Array 641 Controller, Smart Array 642 Controller, Integrated Smart Array Controllers and selected AlphaServer host bus adapters.
  • Hot Plug components can be replaced without powering down the system. This feature significantly enhances system availability.

Mix and Match CapabilitiesHot plug tape was designed with reduced cost of ownership in mind. Now there is no need to purchase a separate controller just for your tape drive. The hot plug capabilities give our customers the ability to mix tape drives and hard drives on the same SCSI bus.

High AvailabilityWith hot plug configurations, you never have to take down your system to replace a failed or non-responding tape device. This increases your uptime for customer accessibility to your systems.

High ReliabilityWith optimized information access features, the AIT 100 GB Tape Drive extends capacity and performance where DAT tape technology ends. AIT is designed to handle the ongoing explosion of data storage requirements. Advanced Metal Evaporated media aids in providing a tape drive that needs minimal cleaning and virtually no head clogging. The AIT 100 GB extends beyond previous generations to provide a mean time before failure (MTBF) rating of 400,000 hours at a 100 percent duty cycle, making the AIT 100 GB a truly enterprise class tape drive.

CompressionBuilt-in Advanced Lossless Data Compression (ALDC) hardware compression

Compatibility and Integration TestingHP StorageWorks AIT tape drives are fully supported and compatible with ProLiant Servers, StorageWorks Enclosures, AlphaServer systems and controllers. HP thoroughly tests products with leading software and operating systems, including VERITAS Backup Exec, CA ARCserve, Yosemite Tapeware, HP Data Protector and Dantz Retrospect software.

ServiceabilityServicing your tape drive has never been this easy. With hot plug tape, there are no tools required and you do not have to power down your server. Simply pull out your defective device and plug in your new one.

Big Power in a Small Tape

Small (standard 5.25" form factor) but powerful, AIT drive is equipped to handle the data deluge. More importantly, data access is rated at an average of 27 to 55 seconds to any point on a 755 feet/230 meter tape.

  • The AIT 100 GB drive delivers (native) 100 GB capacity at 12 MB/s
  • The AIT 50 GB drive delivers (native) 50 GB capacity at 6 MB/s
  • The AIT 35 GB drive delivers (native) 35GB capacity at 4MB/s

Rackmount Tape OptionsSupported in StorageWorks 3U Rackmount Kit. Allows customer to install up to 4 internal AIT drives in a 3U rackmount space. Standard configuration provides two internal SCSI buses (channels) supporting up to two AIT drives per bus. Optional cable kit permits user to extend from two to four internal SCSI buses, increasing the performance (data transfer rate) by allowing the customer to stream data to all four drives simultaneously. Please refer to "Rackmount Tape Drive Kits" QuickSpecs for further information:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10854_na/10854_na.html.

HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L&TT)
The AIT Tape Drives are supported on HP's industry-leading diagnostic tool - HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L&TT). L&TT is a single, convenient program that's a snap to install and simple to operate. L&TT's intuitive user interface eliminates the need for training and deploys in less than five minutes. This robust diagnostic tool is designed for both the experienced professional and the untrained administrator. It ensures product integrity through self-diagnostics and fast resolution to device concerns. Additional information on L&TT plus download information can be found at http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools.
