CacheFS
 

CacheFS is a client side caching filesystem. In an NFS environment, it caches files accessed from NFS servers to a local file system on the client. Any references to the file data already cached is serviced from the local cache, eliminating the need for an over the wire NFS request which reduces network load and improves performance for clients on slow links. The reduction in server load leads to an increase in the server performance and allows the system to serve a larger number of NFS clients.

Features and Benefits
  • CacheFS automatically does the NFS mount and unmount along with the cachefs mount.
  • CacheFS can also be configured to work in conjunction with AutoFS.
  • CacheFS caches all types of files.
  • The data cached through CacheFS is persistent across mounts and reboots.
  • Files and directories are cached on an as needed basis, i.e. only the accessed part of the file data is cached.
  • It is recommended to use CacheFS for read-only mounts; but, if an NFS server is dedicated to a client on a 1-1 basis, CacheFS can be mounted with non-shared option to also allow writes to be cached.
  • Allows fine grained resource limitations on the local caching filesystem, for example, the number of blocks and number of files, ensuring only the required amount of disk space is used from the local disk storage.
  • CacheFS rpages feature allows the client to cache complete copies of the application binary, enabling subsequent runs of the application to be significantly faster.
  • CacheFS supports HFS and VxFS filesystems to hold a cache.
