AutoFS

AutoFS is a client-side service that automatically mounts appropriate file systems upon their reference. The file system remains mounted for as long as it is needed. If a mounted file system is not accessed for a period of time, it is automatically unmounted. AutoFS is primarily used to manage NFS file systems but can be configured to manage any type of file system available on HP-UX.

Availability

AutoFS is available on 11i v1 as an EP/NCF and is delivered as part of the OE on 11i v2. For details and download information on the 11i v1 EP/NCF please visit the following web page:

Features and Benefits
  • Automatically mounts and unmounts file systems as needed.
  • Support for distributing AutoFS maps via NIS, NIS and LDAP.
  • Improved performance with on-demand mounting feature. AutoFS mounts only those file systems that are accessed whereas other automounting facilities mount an entire set of file systems if they are hierarchically related. This increases performance by preventing unnecessary mounts and unmounts.
  • Support for managing all file system types available on HP-UX including NFSv2, NFSv3, CacheFS, UFS, VxFS, CDFS and CIFS.
  • The AutoFS browsing feature allows a user to view the directories that can be mounted for an indirect map without having to actually mount them. This is a convenience for users and can increase performance by not forcing mounts and unmounts in order to view directories.
  • AutoFS performs concurrent mounts and unmounts using a multithreaded automountd daemon whereas other automounting facilities did not have this capability. This profoundly increases performance and prevents hangs in the service if a server is unavailable.
  • Ability to disable LOFS mounts. This feature is intended for use in HA-NFS configurations where identical cross-mounted file systems are needed.
