NIS+

NIS+ (Network Information Service Plus) is a distributed database system that replaces copies of commonly replicated configuration files with a centralized management facility. Instead of managing the files on each host (like /etc/hosts, /etc/passwd, and so on), NIS+ maintains one database for each file on one central server which allows information to be centralized network wide.

NIS+ was originally designed to replace NIS but has become a parallel product instead. NIS+ provides an NIS compatibility mode, but it is a completely different service.

Availability

NIS+ is delivered as part of the HPUX OE on 11i v1 and 11iv2. For additional product information, please visit the following web page: http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B8681BA:B1031-90045
HP-UX 11i v3 will not support NIS+.

Features and Benefits
  • Domain structure – NIS+ consists of hierarchical domains similar to those of DNS. So subdomains can be used in NIS+ environment.
  • Secure – NIS+ has authentication/authorization mechanism to increase security. It uses secure rpc, which uses a private key/public key authentication scheme with DES encryption.
  • Ability to modify (non-ascii) NIS+ table directly.
  • Allows you to update the NIS+ databases from any client host into the network without having to log into the master server.
