ProLiant Essentials Intelligent Networking Pack - Linux Edition

Overview

ProLiant Essentials Intelligent Networking Pack (INP) Linux Edition delivers Virus Throttle, an innovative software product that is capable of detecting, and slowing down the rate of a virus attack spreading inside the core of the network infrastructure. Based on HP Labs technology, this networking software buys time for IT administrators to react to fast spreading virus types by sending a SNMP trap or a log event. Virus throttle works without knowing anything about the virus and therefore there is no need for signature updates.

INP software is part of HP's networking software that ships with all HP ProLiant servers (through the ProLiant Support Pack) and HP NIC options, and is activated with a license key. The functions and features of INP can be managed through the user interface of the HP's Network Configuration Utility (NCU). Intelligent Networking Pack can be installed on the same server as the HP Systems Insight Manager console, so a client machine is not needed to view INP.

Standard Features

Virus Throttle

Monitors network traffic for abnormal behavior in outbound TCP connection requests, slows down the spread of virus to "new" machines and reports activity to network administrators. This software relies on the fact that under normal activity a machine makes a fairly low rate of outgoing connections to different machines, and it is more likely to connect to the same machine regularly than to different machines. This behavior contrasts with the fundamental behavior of rapidly spreading viruses or worms. An infected machine attempts to make as many outgoing connections as possible to as many different machines as possible. Virus throttle implements a filter that uses a series of delays to restrict the speed that an infected machine connects to new hosts.

Preventing the spread of virus - ProLiant customers who are looking to implement security measures in their network environment. Virus Throttle does not prevent infection (i.e. the virus has reached the machine), but it is particularly effective against fast-spreading viruses because It restricts the spread of virus thus containing the damage. The outbreak will grow less rapidly, because there will be fewer machines actively spreading the virus, and the network loading will be reduced.
