Product Highlights

Business problems

This solution addresses four primary business problems :

  • Poor performance and response time:
As database size increases, the performance of mission-critical applications deteriorates. The larger the database, the more time it takes to load, unload, search, reorganize, index and optimize. Response time slows. Service levels decline.
  • Increasing TCO for maintaining service level agreements
IT organizations often spend millions of dollars annually on hardware and software license fees just to maintain service levels. Still, this short-term tactical approach does not address the root cause of the problem - excessive data volume.
  • Slow Disaster Recovery
With oversized databases, both active and inactive data must be restored, just to get business data back online. Restoring large volumes of rarely accessed data, in addition to the operational data, can slow the recovery process by hours or even days.
  • Complying with Data Retention Regulations
Data laws require companies to retain data longer and make them available upon request. The cost of retaining large volumes of historical data online in production databases can be prohibitive; yet, the penalties for noncompliance are severe.

RIM for DB Live Archive

The Challenge:
With annual data growth of up to 125 percent, and inactive data reaching 80 percent, application data has become a significant IT cost center. This trend shows no signs of slowing. As application data grows out of control, the cost of IT infrastructure soars, while system performance slows to a crawl.
The conventional response has been to repeatedly increase server and storage capacity and constant tuning. But this approach is only a temporary fix and only defers what's really needed: a permanent solution that addresses the root cause - unmanaged data growth.

RIM for DB, an application and database archiving solution to manage performance, cost, and compliance.
To seize control of the situation, today's smart IT organizations take an Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) approach, dedicating high-end resources to production data while relocating historical transactions to online archives stored on more cost-effective servers and storage classes. Online archiving is an indispensable key to managing the application data lifecycle while ensuring regulatory compliance.
RIM for DB manages accelerating data growth by relocating closed transactions and other infrequently accessed data to an online, easily accessible archive database, significantly reducing the size of the production system and improving application performance. With RIM for DB Live Archive, you can:

  • Identify inactive data based on business rules, activity history and retention policies
  • Relocate inactive business transactions to an online archive database on less expensive storage
  • Retain application transparency providing online, real-time user access to a combined view of production and archived data through native application and reporting interface.

RIM for DB Live Archive boosts application performance, improves application availability and stability, and cuts IT infrastructure costs. Furthermore, it retains transparent, online, real-time access to both the production and archive data.

Major Features
RIM for DB Live Archive offers a complete set of application-aware archiving features:

  • Oracle E-Business Suite Archiving: Supports Oracle E-Business Suite (Financials, Human Resources, Manufacturing, and Customer Relationship Management)via Application Packs for the Oracle E-Business Suite
  • PeopleSoft Archiving: Supports PeopleSoft Enterprise (Financials, Human Resources, Manufacturing, and Customer Relationship Management) via Application Packs for PeopleSoft Enterprise.
  • Using the Designer and Run Time platform, Application Packages can be built to support other applications and environments
  • Combined View of Data: Provides real-time, transparent visibility into a combined view of production and archive data.
  • 24x7 Availability with Zero Impact on Production System: Executes archive operations without shutting down the application.
  • Restores High Performance: Improves application performance by reducing the size of production database including database reorganization and space reclamation.

  • Operating Systems: HP-UX 11; AIX; Solaris 8, Windows 2000; Linux Red Hat
  • Application Aware: Supports latest vendor patches and vendor upgrades to ensure compatibility between production and archive data.

RIM for Databases:
Open Archive
Database Archiving for Long-term Data Retention, Governance and Regulatory Compliance

The Challenge
Applications are temporary, data is permanent. This fact of life has huge bottom-line consequences for the enterprise. Regulatory compliance requires companies to retain transactional data for up to thirty years or more. Until now, retiring legacy applications has meant maintaining millions of records on expensive production servers or difficult-to-access offline archives. As a result, any IT departments actually forestall legacy application retirement and continue to maintain multiple copies of transactional data in the production environment long after active usage.

Regulatory Compliance through Sustainable, Long-Term Access to Historical Records

Open Archive addresses the final stage of the information lifecycle. With RIM for DB Open Archive, HP addresses a major issue for corporate governance, as mounting pressure to comply with regulatory requirements forces companies to re-evaluate their data retention policies. Today, more than 10,000 federal and state regulations mandate how companies must protect, store, and access current and historical transaction records. To comply with regulations like FASB, HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley, companies must actively manage application data as never before.

RIM for DB Open Archive is the only open standards-based XML archive to store aged data as complete business transactions that remain independently addressable across generations of applications, platforms and storage mediums. The data is "encapsulated" with all necessary reference metadata, so that business transactions within the archive can be accessed by any XML query, even after the source application has been retired.

Users can move historical records from historical databases to RIM for DB Open Archive, where data is stored in XML format along with XML Schema Definitions (XDS) that provide complete information on every transaction. Alternatively, users can move data directly from production environments to Open Archive. As a result, the archived transaction record is completely independent of application, platform, database, or operating system.

With RIM for Open Archive, you can:

  • Identify inactive legacy data based on activity history and data retention policies
  • Archive inactive business transactions to disk- or file-based storage in a self-contained, self-describing, and survivable XML-based format
  • Retain online access to the data via standard XML query tools.

Major Features

By completing the information lifecycle for application and database content, RIM for DB HP Open Archive delivers:

  • Survivability: Archives historical data in survivable format that remains usable even beyond the lifetime of the production system.
  • Sustainability: Remains independent of source application, file system, operating system, and platform.
  • Real-time, Standards Based Access: Provides archive access via xQuery, the open, XML standard query language supported by thousands of third-party vendors. Relational technologies can also access this data container.
  • Storage Independent: Enables the use of low-cost storage classes, including CAS, ATA.
  • Compliance Reporting: Supports audits for compliance, reference, and litigation.
  • Integration: Uses policy-based archive process and data retention policies as defined in RIM for DB Archive Monitor
  • Audit Trail: Copies transaction and reference data from OLTP and logs transaction state
  • Oracle custom application support

RIM for DB Ready Subset

Challenges:
Application deployments, customizations, upgrades and enhancements all require copies of the production database for testing, development, QA, staging and training. When you create multiple copies of your entire production database, the toll on your IT infrastructure and time-to-delivery can be significant. Yet application managers need true relational data to effectively develop and test the new functionality required to meet new business challenges

HP Ready Subset to gain control of test and development data:
RIM for DB Ready Subset automatically generates database Ready Subsets to provide complete control of the size and composition of the development database instances. With HP Ready Subset, you can:

  • Clone production databases
  • Select and set policy by time, organization, accounting unit or storage capacity
  • Identify data to Ready Subset
  • Remove unwanted data
  • Reorganize data and reclaim space

Major Features
To help curb application data growth while expediting application software projects, RIM for DB Ready Subset offers a broad array of Ready Subsetting features:

  • Relationally Intact Ready Subsets: Generates Ready Subsets that retain data integrity and relationships for consistent business processes.
  • Automated Definition: Automated instance definition and generation to speed IT development efforts.
  • Re-use: Supports re-use of stored definitions, polices, and rules.
  • Storage Savings: Reorganizes test and development databases and reclaims storage space for more effective use of development resources.
  • Enterprise Application Support: (Oracle E-Business Suite)

RIM for DB Archive Monitor
For ongoing data growth analysis and policy management.

The Challenge
With annual data growth of up to 125 percent, and inactive data reaching 80 percent, most organizations today lack the ability to accurately track and analyze data growth. The result: poor system performance, high storage costs and increasing compliance issues to meet data retention requirements.

Intelligent Insight to Application Data Growth
A key component of the RIM for DB suite, Archive Monitor is an enterprise dashboard that intelligently monitors systems, forecasts and models data growth to provide real-time application performance monitoring and helps create and enforce effective data retention policies. It lets you:

  • Monitor current data allocation and growth activity
  • Forecast data growth across applications, databases, business processes and storage classes
  • Model and preview the impact of data retention policy without affecting production data
  • Diagnose and resolve data management issues before they impact operations.

Improved retention policies enable the enterprise to maintain optimum system performance, better utilize storage resources, and proactively manage storage costs while fulfilling service level agreements.

  • Enterprise Data Distribution Report: Shows how data is distributed by business applications, users, departments and storage devices, across an organization or its departments.
  • Application Data Growth Report: Drills down into a business application on a specific instance to show data growth over time. The report also shows the growth of active and inactive data over time.
  • Storage Utilization by Module Report: Shows the distribution of storage/server space by application module. This report helps to identify which modules are consuming the most space.
  • Data Growth Forecast: Supports forecasting with full modeling capability for events like application upgrades, data imports, archiving etc.
  • Top 100 Tables Report: Shows the top 100 largest tables in the business application.

Major Features
RIM for DB Archive Monitor provides total visibility and control of application data growth across the enterprise:

  • Dashboard: Provides a view of all database instances in your enterprise environment. Monitors and analyzes application performance in both graphical and tabular form. Supports aggregation, drill-downs and alerts.
  • Time-based Policy Preview: Provides ability to preview the impact of retention policies. Allows "what if" analysis by graphically displaying projected data volumes for any given time-based archiving policy.
  • Retention Policy Control: Sets and enforces data retention policies for more cost-effective management of application data.
  • Packaged Application Mapping: Provides out-of-the-box support for Oracle and PeopleSoft application modules.
  • Custom Application Mapping: Provides an open interface to allow mapping of packaged application customizations as well as custom applications.
  • Customizable Alert Thresholds: Set alert thresholds to flag applications that are growing rapidly. There are also alerts for applications that have a large amount of inactive data.
