Introduction

HP Application Recovery Manager Software (AppRM) automates array-based backup and recovery of business application databases. In the event of failure or corruption, AppRM provides the ability to restore data to the moment before an outage. Application Recovery Manager, Powered by Data Protector Software technology, delivers a stand alone solution to augment your existing backup software strategy. Application Recovery Manager provides seamless integration with HP storage hardware and management solutions.

AppRM is tightly integrated with key 3^rd party backup technologies to enable reliable data recovery and when embedded in an SAP eco system, enhances the backup and recovery experience by reducing the impact of SAP application operations. In HP-UX environments, Oracle users benefit from this newly enhanced integration with SAP. AppRM can now initiate a backup through SAP BR tools which can later be transported to perform a zero-downtime (ZDB) to tape. Application Recovery Manager remains integrated with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to make non-disruptive point-in-time copies of Exchange and Microsoft SQL databases for recovery in minutes. Microsoft VSS provides the basis to create online point-in-time copies of open files from a file server, backup applications or from within business applications running in Windows environments.

The Cell Manager must meet the following minimum requirements:

• 256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended). For each parallel backup session 40 MB of RAM are required. For example, if you want to run 60 parallel backup sessions 3 GB of RAM are needed.
• 190 MB of disk space (for use by the IDB)
• 2x<size of the biggest package to be installed> + 5MB of disk space needed on system drive
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or later

Hardware Providers

• HP VSS hardware providers: VSS hardware providers enable point-in-time copies with instant recovery of a single volume or multiple volumes. VSS providers are typically used in combination with a requestor application such as a backup and recovery application, or in this case Application Recovery Manager. Microsoft VSS services enable business applications to interface seamlessly with HP StorageWorks Arrays to perform point-in-time copies with nearly instant recovery.
  
• HP VDS hardware providers: VDS hardware providers enable volume and logical unit management of HP StorageWorks arrays from a central Windows Server 2003 Microsoft Management Console. Administrators can discover, configure and monitor supported HP storage devices from Windows Server 2003 operating environments.

NOTE: The capacity LTUs are based on the amount of data you want copied, not on the total capacity of copies made. Thus, the total capacity of VSS shadow copies can exceed the capacity of the LTUs, whereas the total amount of protected storage cannot.

The Windows 2003 file system snapshot feature VSS (Volume Shadow copy default provider) is supported without these capacity-based LTU licenses. However, backup via a hardware provider requires this license.
