Microsoft® iSCSI Software Target for ProLiant Storage Servers

Microsoft iSCSI Software Target adds block storage capability to ProLiant Storage Servers and creates a single platform that delivers file, print, and application storage services, all over existing Ethernet networks. It is a powerful iSCSI software solution that provides affordable storage provisioning, protection, and availability for small and medium office environments. It helps administrators consolidate storage capacity, improve storage utilization, minimize system downtime, simplify backup operations, enable rapid recovery, and provides high availability for key applications and services.

Adds application storage (block) services to ProLiant Storage Servers	Simplify tasks and lower your total cost of storage ownership by consolidating islands of direct-attached storage connected to your application servers to one Windows platform to manage, scale, and protect. Eliminate the need to continually add storage capacity to some servers while others have unused and wasted disk capacity.

Uses existing well-understood and low-cost Ethernet connectivity	An iSCSI target leverages existing management expertise and Ethernet network infrastructures that are already in place. You can implement an application storage network solution utilizing familiar technologies that you already understand within the existing network and storage infrastructures of your small or medium office environment.

Compatible with standard Windows Server 2003 R2 backup applications	Centralize file and application backup and dramatically reduce the time required to backup critical data - and avoid the lost productivity that long backup windows inevitably cause. Improve disk-to-tape backup processing and greatly simplify the deployment of disk-to-disk (D2D) and disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup solutions.

Built-in support for Snapshots, Clustering and Multi-path I/O	Use the features already present in the Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Operating System to protect your application data as well as your files. For instance, using the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), you can create point-in-time copies (snapshots) of critical application data - on a scheduled basis or on-demand. You can cluster iSCSI targets using Microsoft Clustering Service (MSCS). Or you can utilize multi-path I/O (MPIO) functionality for scalable performance, load-balancing, and failover functionality that dramatically decreases potential downtime. NOTE: Clustering is supported only on HP ProLiant Storage Server and StorageWorks NAS models running the Enterprise Edition of Windows Storage Server 2003 R2; requires the addition of one NAS cluster license (Storage Server Cluster Kit: 331474-B21) per cluster node. HP ProLiant Storage Server SAN Gateway models running Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition already include Microsoft iSCSI Target. NOTE: Microsoft iSCSI Target does not support concurrent use of MSCS and MPIO.

Operating System and Platform Support

Licensed for use on HP ProLiant Storage Server and HP StorageWorks NAS products running either Standard or Enterprise Edition of the Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 Operating System (both x86 and x64 versions are included). Your HP NAS device may require an operating system upgrade to ensure compatibility with Microsoft iSCSI Software Target; check your product documentation for more information about your operating system version and edition.

NOTE: HP ProLiant DL380 G5 SAN Gateway Storage Server (AG771B), HP ProLiant SB460c SAN Gateway (AN583A), and other ProLiant Storage Server gateway models have Microsoft Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003 (Enterprise x64 Edition) Operating System pre-installed, which already includes Microsoft iSCSI Software Target functionality.

Data Replication Support	All HP ProLiant Storage Servers include the Distributed File System Replication (DFS-R) feature in the pre-installed Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 or Windows Unified Data Storage Server operating system. DFS-R is a file-based replication technology that only replicates files when they are closed. Microsoft iSCSI Software Target does not close the virtual disk files (.vhd files) while they are in use, and so these files are not replicated during normal usage when replicating using DFS-R. Therefore, if iSCSI Software Target virtual disk files need to be replicated, DFS-R should not be used. If only replicating shared folders, then DFS-R can be considered. When replicating shared folders, DFS-R can enable one-way or two-way (multi-master) replication which can be useful in collaboration environments. HP's StorageWorks Storage Mirroring software asynchronously replicates each write into the file system to a secondary system, and therefore it can be used to effectively replicate iSCSI Software Target virtual disk files. It can also be used to effectively replicate shared folders as well - but only in a one-way replication topology. HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring (SM) Software is an ideal entry host-based software product for IP networks. SM does not require high bandwidth Fibre Channel networks, high capacity replication and zero down time service levels. Storage Mirroring provides near real-time full application or file recovery up to the last byte replication. SM is an excellent choice for low bandwidth; low storage volume changes and meets business recovery goals within tens of minutes or hours. The immediate return on investment is realized in the reduced management cost associated with branch or small offices networks.

Software Licensing	LTUs (license to use) are per HP Proliant Storage Server target installation.

Software Product Services

Product Support gives the customer access to HP's experienced technical support resources as well as access to HP's Information Services database for support on a variety of multi-vendor/multi-platform software products. Product support includes escalations and problem coordination with the appropriate engineering group. HP Services offer a variety of options to allow you to tailor your product service to meet the needs of your organization. Basic warranty on products can be uplifted from day one to ensure you receive the service you need when you need it.

Software Warranty

HP warrants that the software media will be free of physical defects for a period of 90 days from delivery.

The following software product services are sold under HP Care Pack Services program and via customized contract-based services.

HP Care Pack is defined as an upgrade to the product warranty attribute, available for a specific duration and hours of coverage.
HP Care Pack is available for sale anytime during the warranty period for most products, but the commencement date will be the same as the Warranty Start Date (delivery date to end user customer). Proof of purchase may be required.
HP Care Pack services are prepaid.
Customers will have the ability to purchase HP Care Pack services to a 24x7 support service
