Overview

HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software v5

Natural and man-made disasters can occur when you least expect it - serving as a reminder that in less than a moment's notice, volumes of data loss can occur. To prevent data loss from failure, error, or disaster, HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software provides replication of valuable Windows and Linux data to another server. Proactive replication is a key strategy that can be coupled with tape backup and/or snapshot technology for up-to-the-second data protection. Having replicated data co-located enable customers to recover their static and transactional data without loss of productivity.

HP Storage Mirroring Software provides host-based replication and failover for enterprise and midrange customers seeking an alternative to fabric or array-based replication. Patented replication and failover technology continuously captures byte-level data changes as they occur in your production environment and replicates those changes to one or more servers in any location without geographic limitations. By replicating only the bytes that change, Storage Mirroring Software uses the absolute minimum bandwidth required to replicate customer data. Advanced features allow a customer to control bandwidth usage and queue data for replication during off-peak times if desired. This software does not need special hardware to run and utilizes existing LAN or WAN infrastructure that already exists in their environment -saving time, additional investment, and maintenance. Storage Mirroring Software is storage independent. It will support any DAS, NAS, and SAN storage device and will support different platforms including Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Storage Server, 64-bit Windows, Windows on Itanium and Red Hat Linux. The flexibility, resource optimization, and application-specific protection enable customers to solidify their data and disaster protection strategies using Storage Mirroring Software.

What's New
  • Introducing support for Linux (Red Hat) environments. Customers can protect Windows and Linux environments using the same hardware resources.
  • Introducing enhanced VMware ESX Virtual Infrastructure support. Customers can now replicate VMware environments at the disk level, capturing data and configuration information.
  • Introducing a new software option (Server Recovery Option) that captures a server's configuration information including OS, patches, drivers, and Service Packs. The IT department can respond to a server failure and use the Server Recover Option to re-create the boot sequence on a new server plus all of the data captured during the replication and send that data to the production site for replacement.
  • Introducing a new software feature (Full Server Failover) that creates a one-to-one relationship between two servers. Should a production server fail, the server running Full Server Failover would assume the identity of the production server. The failover can occur over any distance and does not require "Enterprise" versions of the operating system or applications.

Customer Benefits
Ease of Management
  • A 4-Step configuration and protection wizard for Exchange, SQL, and SharePoint server offering expert installation for people with novice skills or limited time.
  • Storage Mirroring Software is designed to be flexible, easy to learn, and support many different customer platforms. Customers can intuitively learn how to use the software and be able to apply that knowledge to support any DAS, NAS, and SAN storage and many operating system platforms.
  • Customer's can achieve efficiency by using a single software program for replication and failover even when different versions of an Operating System are deployed - Windows 2000, Windows 2003 R2, Windows on Itanium for example.
Data Protection
  • Host-based replication without geographic limitations captures changes as they occur, maintaining data sequence and transmits that data over existing network infrastructure ensuring the integrity of data.
  • Replicated data can be used to complement tape backup and array snapshots without impacting production server.
  • Storage Mirroring Software can eliminate the "backup window" by replicating data from several production servers to a single centralized server. This centralization enables tape backup to occur from the replication server instead of pulling data sets across the LAN or WAN from all production servers.
High Availability
  • Supports replication of multiple production servers to a single target server as a "many-to-one" replication scheme.
  • Using the Server Recovery Option, Storage Mirroring can enable the collection of all appropriate boot files, drivers, security patches, Service Pack information, and operating system files on your source server. This information is replicated to a separate centralized server. SRO helps reduce the time needed to "build" a like-server at the centralized site.
  • Full Server Failover sets up a 1:1 server to server ratio where all data, boot files, OS files, patches, drivers are replicated and a server failover can occur within seconds offering customers a "cluster-like" experience.
Smart Resource Utilization
  • Replication over existing IP network (LAN/WAN) enables deployment of Storage Mirroring without additional infrastructure costs or complex configuration of a new independent data network.
  • To reduce impact on the network and production applications, data compression can be implemented and improve overall replication performance.
  • Improved management of system resources enables an administrator to handle larger amounts of data and higher rates of change while maintaining connections to target servers.
  • With the flexibility to work in any IP network, Storage Mirroring allows customers to utilize existing networks and also provides tools for customers to throttle the bandwidth that Storage Mirroring uses. This throttling can be done on real time replication or used with scheduled replication.

Software Licensing

StorageWorks Storage Mirroring LTU (license to use) is per WinTel or Itanium host installation. When purchasing a 10 unit LTU, 10 activation key codes are provided, one for each WinTel hosts. Itanium installation is only available in a 1 unit LTU (license to use).

HP's Storage Mirroring software requires a software license per server that will participate in the replication and failover process*. A typical scenario would be a 1-to-1 configuration - a production server and a replication server. In this 1-to- scenario, each server would require a Storage Mirroring license. If you chose to implement a many-to-1 scenario where you have many production servers that you want to replicate to a single server, all servers need to be licensed.

Additionally, you will need to match the version of your operating system for each server to the appropriate version of Storage Mirroring. For example, if you have Microsoft Storage Server operating system on a NAS box, you need to have the NAS version of Storage Mirroring. Similarly, if you have the Enterprise Edition of Microsoft Server, you need the Enterprise version of Storage Mirroring.

The software does not need special hardware to function and utilizes your existing LAN or WAN infrastructure.

Storage Mirroring software is extremely flexible and supports different storage technologies even if you have a mix of different hardware and operating editions or versions:

  • DAS (servers with internal drives or external drives)
  • NAS (ProLiant Storage Server products)
  • SAN (XP, EVA, MSA or AiO)

* There is a single exception with the Storage Mirroring for Virtual Infrastructure. With this product, ONLY the production machines need to have the Storage Mirroring licenses. Each Storage Mirroring license supports up to 5 virtual machines on the production server. If you have 9 virtual machines to protect, you will need 2 licenses of Storage Mirroring for Virtual Infrastructure.

Getting the Storage Mirroring Software Instructions:

  1. Select the appropriate version for your operating system.
  2. Download the Storage Mirroring software for a 60 day evaluation.
(Note if you have purchased an All-in-One Storage System or ProLiant Storage System product, the Storage Mirroring installer or evaluation software will be embedded on the disk image). The Linux and Virtual Infrastructure products are currently not available as a 60 day trial. These products are only available at HP's Not-For-Resale (NFR) site from an HP channel partner.
All features and options are enabled during this evaluation period.
  3. Type in "EVAL" during the installation when you are prompted for an activation or license code.

At the end of the evaluation period, the appropriate Storage Mirroring licenses are required to continue using the software. All configurations, settings, and jobs created during the evaluation period are maintained when the appropriate Storage Mirroring licenses are added even if the evaluation software has previously expired.

The 60-day trial software cannot be re-installed on the same server after the software has expired. The customer may elect to purchase the License To Use (LTU), re-install the trial on another server, or not use the software.

Getting the Storage Mirroring License Key:

You need to obtain a permanent activation key to make your Storage Mirroring license valid beyond the 60 day trial period.

  1. You need to purchase the appropriate Storage Mirroring part number that matches your operating system on your server. Those part numbers can be obtained from your HP channel partner.
  2. After ordering the part number, you will receive an HP Entitlement Certificate. This certificate will contain information on how to create a permanent software license.
  3. The Entitlement Certificate will provide instructions on how to proceed to an HP web site that will automatically generate your license key.
  4. The HP licensing web site will ask you to enter contact information and your order number from the entitlement certificate.
  5. The web site will generate the activation key and email a permanent activation certificate to the email address you previously supplied. An activation code will appear on the certificate.
  6. Upon receipt of the activation code, you may reload the software and enter the activation code and make the license fully functional and permanent.

NOTE: Storage Mirroring version 5 has new 24 character activation codes. Previous versions of Storage Mirroring had 16 character codes. The version 5, 24 character activation codes WILL NOT activate any software that is version 4.5 or below. Any new Storage Mirroring servers must be version 5 and use the new version 5, 24 character activation codes. Note: Storage Mirroring version 5, once licensed, will interoperate with any Storage Mirroring v4.4 or v4.5 servers.
