HP StorageWorks XP Cluster Extension Software

HP StorageWorks XP Cluster Extension Software offers disaster tolerance against application downtime from fault, failure, or site disaster by extending clusters between data centres. It resurrects your critical applications at a remote site within minutes after an event. HP StorageWorks XP Cluster Extension works seamlessly with your open-system clustering software, HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access and your XP storage system to automate fail-over and fail-back between sites. Using XP Continuous Access remote mirroring allows Cluster Extension to verify the status of the storage as well as the status of the server cluster; thus, the correct failover and failback decisions are made which minimize downtime, and accelerates recovery - without human intervention.

Any amount of system downtime can mean lost productivity, lost revenue, lost customers, and lost opportunities. Shield your valuable information against the threat of downtime - whether planned or unplanned - with HP Cluster Extension. Cluster Extension maintains the availability of corporate operations even in the face of adverse events, making your business resilient, regardless of external or internal events. HP provides proven strategies, services, and technologies to reduce your exposure and vulnerability.

Product Features and Benefits

Disaster Tolerance (DT) vs. Disaster Recovery (DR)

Cluster Extension is the key that unlocks the critical difference between Disaster Recovery (DR) and Disaster Tolerance (DT). DR products pledge that operations will resume following downtime. Cluster Extension delivers Disaster Tolerance - control over the possibility of downtime itself.

Protection against transaction data loss Because the application cluster is extended over two sites and the storage is replicated at the second site using replication methodology, data exists ubiquitously with virtually no difference (depending on the replication method) in the data storage from site A to site B. No-single-point-of-failure solution to increase the availability of company and customer data.

Fully Automatic Failover and Failback Automated failover and failback reduces the complexity involved in a disaster recovery situation. It is protection against the risk of downtime, whether planned or unplanned.

No server reboot during failover Disks on the Server on both the primary and secondary sites are recognized during the initial system boot in a XP CLX environment; therefore LUN presentation and LUN mapping changes are not necessary during failover or failback - for a truly hand-free disaster tolerant solution.

No Single Point of failure Supreme redundancy: identical configuration of established SAN infrastructure redundancies are implemented on site B.

New Cluster Extension Solution Implementation Service This required service offers initial consultation with a trained Services consultant to ensure the E2E solution components for the CLX Solution are properly installed and configured. This service may be expanded through the custom statement of work, to include hardware installation, cluster configuration, CLX solution testing, CLX dependency SW installation and configuration and associated documentation. To address the needs of your business, your customized SOW may also expand to include a documented design plan, which may encompass project management, design activities, tailored implementation, testing, and an orientation session. Continuing Services options offers additional protection for your Disaster Tolerant XP CLX solution. Aligning the duration of software support contracts with the duration of HP Server and/or HP array support contracts is recommended.

XP Continuous Access Journal Support The use of Journal provides better protection during short link failures and can maintain journal operations during High I/O load to the primary array. Write order is maintained by using sequence numbers for each write I/O and data consistency is always guaranteed on the remote array.

XP array support XP24000/20000, XP12000/10000, XP1024/128, and XP512/48 arrays are supported on either end of the DT configuration. Whether re-purposing legacy units or adding Next-generation units to an existing XP CLX configuration, both sites are covered. See "Software Support" section for configuration requirements.

HP StorageWorks XP Cluster Extension is licensed per cluster node. One license is required for each node of the cluster that will contain a CLX resource intended for failover and failback in the event of failure. A license is not required for the Quorum server (assuming that the CLX Resource is not installed on the Quorum server) nor cluster nodes that do not have a CLX resource installed.

Related Products
XP Continuous Access

HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access is a controller-based application that performs real-time replication between HP StorageWorks XP Disk Arrays.

XP Continuous Access provides customers with the highest level of storage data protection capabilities to meet their business continuity implementation goals. Customers can achieve a competitive advantage by combining disaster-tolerant solutions and disaster-tolerant managed services into their planning and daily routines, ensuring the data's security, availability and integrity.

XP Continuous Access is an irreplaceable component for protecting any business, yours especially. XP Continuous Access is sold by utilized capacity. Please see the product URL for ordering information and part numbers: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/software.html

XP Continuous Access Synchronous
offers data transfer mode between arrays and host. Synchronous data transfers offer the highest levels of data protection. With synchronous operations, both the source and destination copies are identical and concurrent at all times. Synchronous mirroring ensures that data copies are identical, to prevent critical data loss in the event of a failure or disaster. In this mode, data is written simultaneously to the mirrored cache of the local storage system and the remote storage system, in real time, before the application I/O is completed, thus ensuring the highest possible data consistency. Synchronous replication is appropriate when exact consistency is critical to the business application.

XP Continuous Access Asynchronous
offers data transfers between storage arrays with up to 100ms one-way latency between gateways. The advantage of asynchronous replication is that the host to storage I/O is not impacted by the latency between gateways, resulting in faster write completion back to the host. Un-transmitted write I/O's are stored in the primary array cache and transmitted in bulk to the remote array. The array maintain write order using sequence numbers for each write I/O and will always have consistent data on the remote array, even if some transactions were lost during the disaster. This may be beneficial or preferred by long distance remote replication configurations.

XP Continuous Access Journal
improves the async replication method, by storing un-transmitted write I/O in a disk based journal device instead of the array cache, releasing valuable resource to other operations in the array. The use of Journal device provide better protection during short link failures and can maintain journal operations during High I/O load to the primary array. Write order is maintained by using sequence numbers for each write I/O and data consistency is always guaranteed on the remote array.

Implementing Synchronous, Asynchronous or Journal replication is dependent on the specific replication environments and the customer requirements. Replication method can be assigned at the DR group level, and using a mixture of replication methods in the same environment is allowed.
Cluster Services

HP Serviceguard for Linux (SGLX) is specialized software for protecting mission-critical applications from a wide variety of hardware and software failures. With Serviceguard, multiple servers (nodes) and/or server partitions are organized in to an enterprise cluster that delivers highly available application services to LAN-attached clients. HP Serviceguard monitors the health of each node and rapidly responds to failures in a way that minimizes or eliminates application downtime. Visit: http://www.hp.com/info/sglx for more information.

Microsoft Majority Node Set (MNS) is a quorum service available with Windows OS that provides protection against split-brain situations without the single point of failure of a traditional Quorum disk. Split Brain syndrome occurs when the servers at one site of the stretched cluster lose all connection with the servers at the other site and the servers at each site form independent clusters. The serious consequence of split-brain syndrome is corruption of business data since data will no longer be consistent. Majority Node Set with File Share Witness (FSW) is another quorum model which is recommended for protection against the split brain situation. This provides the same level of protection as MNS but at a reduced cost.

Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) is a clustering service that detects faults in an application and its dependent components, including the associated database, operating system, network, and storage resources. When a failure is detected, Cluster Server shuts down the application, restarts it on an available server, connects it to the appropriate storage device, and resumes normal operations.

High Availability Cluster Multi-Processor (HACMP) is high availability software that provides failover and recovery for applications by detecting system and application failures. When a failure occurs, HACMP transfers operations to a redundant server in the cluster to keep the application running. Following a failover, when failed components are restored to operation on an alternate server, HACMP fulfills pre-defined policies that you specified during setup.
