Product Highlights
| Accelerated deduplication | The VLS9000 supports capacity licensing for Accelerated deduplication. Accelerated deduplication delivers fast backup and restore performance. Accelerated deduplication retains up to 50 times more data readily available on disk by replacing older redundant blocks of data with pointers to the newest block. Accelerated deduplication delivers fast backup performance since the deduplication process does not impact the backup. Accelerated deduplication delivers fast restore performance since the latest backup copy is always retained in its entirety while data reduction occurs on the previous backups. The VLS9000 can scale data deduplication performance by simply adding additional nodes. |
| Seamless integration |
The HP 9000 Virtual Library System is deployed, managed and operated just like a tape library minimizing disruptions to your environment. Emulations include the HP ESL E-series and MSL tape libraries as well as 1/8 G2 tape autoloaders and tape formats that include the HP Ultrium 230 Tape Drives (LTO-1), HP Ultrium 460 Tape Drives (LTO-2), HP Ultrium 960 Tape Drives (LTO-3), HP Ultrium 1840 Tape Drives (LTO-4), and DLT 7000, DLT 8000, and SDLT 320 tape products. |
| Fast data backup and restoration | The HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual Library System can start as a 7.5 TB, 1 node system and easily scale into a multi-node solution with performance and capacity of 4800 MB/sec and 1280 TB of useable storage with hardware compression for fast data protection and backup in complex SAN environments. Accelerated deduplication (an optional license) retains up to 50 times more data readily available on disk. Accelerated deduplication delivers fast backup performance since the deduplication process does not impact the backup. |
| Cost-effective data protection and ongoing management | The VLS9000 seamlessly integrates into your current backup applications and processes, as well as being a self-managed, auto-configured, auto-monitored, and automatically performance-tuned appliance that is easily installed through a simple interface. Customers can start with a single-node solution of 7.5 TB and easily scale to a multi-node VLS9000 system. As nodes are added the performance increases and additional capacity can be added via capacity modules. |
| Reliability | While the HP 9000 Virtual Library System contains reliable hardware, both server and storage array, featuring hot plug disk drives, standard redundant power supplies and fans as well as Hardware RAID 6 protection, the real reliability is for your data protection process. Simplifying the process by which storage is shared means fewer errors occur, allowing your process to run more smoothly and faster. |
| Deduplication-enabled Replication | All sites involved with deduplication-enabled replication must be licensed for Accelerated deduplication. One VLS deduplication-enabled replication license per target site node is required. Target sites are those sites that receive replicated data from one or more remote sites. For target sites the total number of VLS deduplication-enabled replication licenses required is determined by the number of VLS9000 nodes (AG310B). If replicating in both directions (Active-Active) both sites need to be licensed for deduplication-enabled replication. This application allows these VLS systems to synchronize via low cost IP-WAN connections by only sending the changes (after data deduplication) across the wire. Deduplication-enabled replication provides an improved disaster recovery solution that allows customers to reduce or eliminate off site vaulting of tapes (including associated services) and reduce or eliminate media handling costs. |
| Automigration | The HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual Library System supports Automigration. The initial release of these services is in the form of a "disk cache to tape", called "echo copy", which allows copies of data to be moved off the virtual library to a physical library or another VLS under the control of the VLS, not the backup application. Future updates will allow full integration with ISVs via SMI-S 1.3 specifications supporting what we will call "smart copy". Automigration is an HP developed intellectual property and does not require licensing. HP Data Protector 6.1 supports smart copy. SAN based Automigration is only supported on non-deduplication/replication enabled VLS systems. |
| Automigration - Echo Copy | Echo copy can streamline
the process and reduce the costs of making physical tape cartridges from
virtual tape cartridges, for vaulting and offsiting purposes. Echo copy
is run through the Automigration software (a tab on the VLS GUI), not the
backup application. It acts as a transparent disk cache to the physical
library, so that the backup application writes to virtual cartridges in
the virtual library, and Automigration then automatically schedules the
copies from virtual cartridges to their matching physical cartridges (with
the same barcodes) based on the Automigration policies the user establishes.
Since Echo copy is managed through the Automigration software, not the backup application, the destination library is not visible to the backup application - therefore no licensing is required. Copy traffic is no longer routed through the SAN which speeds up the copy process. Since the tape library is dedicated to the VLS no copy servers are required. Echo copy also eliminates the need for tape-to-tape copy administration since this is automated through copy policy management. All destination tapes created by echo copy are in the native tape format, so they can be easily restored directly from any tape drive or library that is visible to the backup application. |
| Automigration - Smart Copy | Smart copy provides the same capabilities as Echo copy with one important exception. Smart Copy allows the backup ISV to initiate the copy with the VLS9000 directly managing the tape migration process. SMI-S 1.3 support is required by the ISV in order to be able to implement Smart Copy. HP Data Protector 6.1 supports Smart Copy. |
| Electronic Software Delivery | Electronic software is now available in most countries. HP recommends purchasing electronic products over physical products when available for faster delivery and the convenience of not having to manage-either file away or throw away-confidential paper licenses. | One Accelerated deduplication
license is required for each 10 TB of capacity, three licenses per VLS9000
30 TB Array and four licenses per VLS9000 40 TB Array. The entire array
capacity of the VLS system must be licensed for deduplication. One license
is required for each base unit, VLS9000 10TB system (AQ740A) and the VLS9000
7.5 TB system (AQ738A). For each of the VLS9000 10 TB shelf upgrades (AQ741A)
one license is required for each additional shelf. For each of the VLS9000
7.5 TB upgrades (AQ739A) one license is required for each additional shelf
EXCEPT for the last of the four shelves which does not require a license
since the 3 LTUs already purchased cover the total 30 TB of the system. **Electronic software is available in all countries except China and Japan. For China and Japan should order the physical equivalent. |
NOTE: In addition to the capacity deduplication licensing for VLS here are four other key considerations:
NOTE: The entire VLS device must be licensed for deduplication - no partial licenses supported. Deduplication licenses will be installed via the VLS GUI license plug-in. |

7.5 TB or 10 TB System Configurations - NOTE: Use the steps below as a guide but TO PLACE ACTUAL ORDERS USE WATSON and CLIC TO CONFIGURE A SYSTEM SO THAT ALL RULES ASSOCIATED WITH VLS9000 SYSTEMS ARE ADHERED TO. Step 1 - Configurations (add option #0D1 to products listed for factory integration) |
| HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual Library System 7.5 TB System | AQ738A* | |
| HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual Library System 10 TB System | AQ740A* | |
| *#0D1 allows for factory integration | ||

| Step 2 - Add additional capacity (optional) | ||
| HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual Library System 7.5 TB Capacity Upgrade Module | AQ739A* | |
| HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual Library System 10 TB Capacity Upgrade Module | AQ741A* | |
| *#0D1 allows for factory integration | ||
| NOTE: Each additional capacity upgrade module must be the same capacity (either 7.5 or 10 TB) as that of the base product. A maximum of 3 additional capacity upgrade modules may be added to a base product. Each VLS9000 7.5 or 10TB system is shipped with capacity licenses for all 4 shelves of storage. Once the system reaches the 4 shelf capacity limit further expansion requires making the VLS9000 a multi-node system by adding one of the 30 or 40 TB capacity modules and one of the connectivity kits (AG308A or AG309A). See examples below. | ||
| Example: Customer purchases VLS9000 7.5 TB System (AQ738A). You may add up to three VLS9000 7.5 TB Capacity Upgrade Modules (AQ739A) and attach them to the original VLS9000 7.5 TB System. (Note the capacity module must match the base product capacity). |
| Example: Customer has a VLS9000 7.5 TB System with three additional 7.5 TB capacity modules and wants to expand to a multi-node system. Must purchase either VLS9000 20 Port Connectivity Kit (AG309A) or VLS9000 32 Port Connectivity Kit (AG308A). Per the configuration guides below, for multi-node VLS9000 Systems, customers can then add additional VLS9000 nodes (AG310B) and either VLS9000 30 TB Capacity Module (AG307A) or VLS9000 40 TB Capacity Module (AL562A). |
| NOTE: VLS9000 7.5 TB and 10 TB Systems only support a maximum of 4 shelves of capacity before moving up to a VLS9000 multi-node system. Additionally, if automigration is desired, a connectivity kit (AG308A or AG309A) is required along with Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) Transceivers (A7446-63002) to connect to the connectivity kit. | ||

| NOTE: To size
the appropriate rack, please use the following guide for each component.
For factory integration, a 42U rack is the optimal choice. AQ738A/AQ740A - 3U (ProCurve components add additional 1U) AQ739A/AQ741A - 2U NOTE: (Pallet) used to ship empty racks shipped on a truck (Shock pallet) used to ship racks with equipment installed (by custom systems, VARs and Channels) (Crated) used for air shipments of empty racks. NOTE: 0D1 will appear after the above selected part numbers on your sales order if factory integration is indicated. NOTE: It is mandatory to use a shock pallet in order to ship racks with equipment installed. NOTE: Due to handling and shipping requirements, the AF044A is only orderable through Factory Express; it is not for direct sales. Customer site surveys are required before an order is approved. Multi-Node Configurations - NOTE: Use the steps below as a guide but TO PLACE ACTUAL ORDERS USE WATSON and CLIC TO CONFIGURE A SYSTEM SO THAT ALL RULES ASSOCIATED WITH MULTI-NODE VLS9000 SYSTEMS ARE ADHERED TO. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR LARGE MULIT-RACK SYSTEMS WITH OPTION #0D1 WHICH REQUIRE MANDATORY FACTORY EXPRESS INTEGRATION TO ALLOW THEM TO MOVE THROUGH THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. Step 1 - Configurations (Add option #0D1 to products listed for factory integration) - performance and capacity numbers in the tables are based on 2:1 compressible data. Number of nodes and performance are along the top of the tables below and number of arrays and capacity are along the left side of the tables. 30 TB and 40 TB arrays can be mixed and matched within a VLS9000 multi-node configuration. The tables below show only 30TB or 40TB configurations due to the large number of permutations possible when mixing arrays. |

| NOTE:
Orders with Qty 2 AG308A used within a single VLS system requires AL563A
(Interlink Switch Kit) NOTE: Each VLS9000 node comes with licensing for one 30 or 40TB array, therefore, the LTUs shipped as part of the accessory kit do not need to be used for the first array on a node. For the second array on a node, the LTUs that ship with the array must be used and implemented through the VLS GUI to make the array visible to the VLS. NOTE: If taking advantage of automigration, additional Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers will be needed and can be ordered via part number A7446-60002 Deduplication Processing Nodes With Accelerated deduplication on the VLS9000, customers have the ability to add additional nodes to enhance the deduplication performance of their systems. The basic premise is for every standard node one extra node can be used for deduplication processing up to the maximum of 8 nodes total*. This is the same standard AG310B SKU, however, it is dedicated to deduplication processing versus backup and has no dedicated storage array attached. See the table below that illustrates this feature:
X = node for backup and restore Y = node for deduplication processing only *Currently the total limit of supported nodes for deduplication including deduplication processing nodes is 4. |
