Simplified Licensing

Delivered on a single CD for simplified installation and licensing, HP Insight Control suite for Linux (HP ICE-Linux) contains HP SIM and key Insight software that provide total control, maximum flexibility and tangible savings from your investment in HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem infrastructure.

HP Insight Control suite for Linux provides all necessary activation keys for licensing Deployment, Monitoring, Lifecycle management, HP Insight Power Manager, and HP iLO2 Advanced software.

Easy-to-Use Installer HP Insight Control suite for Linux provides a simple, easy-to-use installer which installs HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) software and all necessary plug-ins to support operating system deployment and advanced management and monitoring. The installer will gather configuration data and subsequently install all of the necessary components in one easy step.

Unified Infrastructure Management
HP Insight Control suite for Linux (HP ICE-Linux), integrated with the HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) software platform running on a Linux distribution, provides a unified, secure and extensible platform to centrally manage servers, storage and other infrastructure devices in a Linux multi-server environment.

HP SIM provides core management services that include device discovery and identification, event views, health monitoring, inventory data collection, alerts, and reporting. HP SIM is built on industry standards and is extensible with value-added Insight software and Storage Essentials as well as with custom applications and scripts to meet individual management needs.

HP ICE-Linux provides flexibility to monitor, manage, and deploy software to various types of managed systems:
  • Systems that are new (i.e. 'bare metal')- the systems do not have an operating system installed and are not known to HP SIM,
  • Systems that have a Linux operating system installed but are not known to HP SIM, and
  • Systems that have a supported Linux operating system installed and are known to HP SIM.

Lights-Out Remote Management HP Insight Control suite for Linux (HP ICE-Linux) uses HP Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO2) Advanced to provide remote access and server control from a distance. Comprehensive, cost-effective Lights-Out management upgrades are provided for ProLiant servers that are managed using the iLO2 Standard remote consoles. HP Integrated Lights-Out 2 Advanced complements standard iLO2 capabilities with additional features that enable full remote control and remote access of your ProLiant servers in routine and emergency situations. HP Integrated Lights-Out 2 Advanced also includes remote console collaboration and replay of BIOS and POST (pre-OS) screens, enterprise security, virtual media and virtual folders, and power management functionality.

Precise Power Measurement and Optimization

HP Insight Control suite for Linux (HP ICE-Linux) delivers precise power and thermal measurement and reporting for HP ProLiant ML/DL 300 and 500 series and HP ProLiant BladeSystem Infrastructure. Power capping functionality complements existing power regulation technology by allowing customers to limit power usage at a particular wattage or at a percentage of a server's maximum power rating. New Dynamic Power Capping capabilities increase the number of servers that can be deployed per circuit by as much as 36%. Dynamic Power Capping for single servers allows you to safely reclaim unused power and cooling capacity by limiting power usage without risk of performance degregation or circuit over-subscription. In BladeSystem enclosures the power budget can be dynamically shared across multiple ProLiant BL servers for additional savings. Power management alerts help you optimize Dynamic Power Capping settings by informing you when power caps have been reached at the server or enclosure level. These capabilities ensure that data center staff and IT managers have the information they need to optimize server density within existing power and cooling constraints and to ensure efficient use of power resources.

The HP Insight Power Manager software is supported on a select group of ProLiant servers that ship with the iLO2 management processor. For more information on supported servers, please reference the HP Insight Power Manager Quick Specs at: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12623_na/12623_na.html

NOTE: The power management capability will not function for HP ProLiant DL 785 G5 servers.

Total Control Monitoring
HP Insight Control suite for Linux (HP ICE-Linux) integrates and auto-configures numerous open source technologies (e.g. Nagios®, syslog, supermon) for an advanced set of health and performance monitoring on HP ProLiant servers. Extensive monitoring capabilities provide status, events, histories, graphs, notifications, alerts, and reporting. Virtual hosts and guests can be monitored to assess the effectiveness of virtualized environments. Live monitoring ring plots provide at-a-glance performance assessments across all systems in large environments from a wide variety of metrics.

Auto-configuration of the integrated monitoring capabilities provides immediate user productivity. The auto-generated user configuration scripts are accessible to allow further customization as desired.
This integrated monitoring environment also allows you the use industry-common Nagios® plug-ins to customize your control over your systems. Efficient operation is assured by the user's choice of the agents to be used for implementation; but even when the recommended minimum set of agents is selected, the performance impact is far less than 1% on system usage.

Information can be viewed using customizable graphical displays; or alternatively, the same monitoring information can be accessed via command line interface. These advanced monitoring capabilities, which are integrated to proactively notify through HP Systems Insight Manager software, provide the understanding which is needed to take the guesswork out of infrastructure control.

Rapid Scalable Deployment and Provisioning
HP Insight Control suite for Linux (HP ICE-Linux) delivers an integrated deployment solution for HP ProLiant servers to improve productivity of system administrators in multi-system Linux environments. In addition to bare-metal system discovery, Rapid Scalable Deployment enables the scalable management of Linux distro installations, operating system installs, image and script-based (KickStart, AutoYAST) installations, captured images, agents, firmware updates, virtual machines, and custom scripts. A user-controlled software repository provides flexible control over content, scheduling, and customizations.

Productivity can be enhanced by using a one-to-many deployment mode or the new 'avalanche' deployment mode for parallelized implementation in large environments. The user can also apply management actions to classes of servers for better utilization. These capabilities scale the deployment and provisioning options for large environments

HP ICE-Linux supports deployments across the variety of HP BladeSystems and HP ProLiant servers, including IPMI-based DL160 & DL180 (rack) servers. The integration of these deployment capabilities with HP System Insight Manager software provides for efficient registration and management for Linux multi-system environments.

Integrated Firmware Updates Users of HP Insight Control suite for Linux can accelerate their version control processes using integrated system firmware update capabilities. Firmware updates can be deployed using parallelized deployment ('avalanche') processes for high productivity which scales in large environments. When combined with update services for Linux distributions, these capabilities form a solid foundation for version control in Linux environments.

Unified Virtual and Physical Systems Management HP Insight Control suite for Linux (ICE-LX) includes HP Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) software for unified management and control of virtual environments. This affordable virtualization is based on XEN®, the open source hypervisor which is already provided with many Linux distributions. Capabilities include association of virtual machines with their physical hosts in HP SIM; monitoring performance of virtual machines and host servers; virtual machine control functions (e.g. start , stop, pause, suspend), and virtual machine recovery functions (e.g. copy, move). With unified management of physical and virtual resources, systems administrators now have the ability extend existing processes to the management of their virtualized infrastructure while leveraging best-in-class technology for virtual machine deployment, monitoring, and control.
