HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform (SVSP)

Targeted at enterprise and mid-size firms that are experiencing significant storage growth and adopting server virtualization, the HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform or SVSP helps customers improve efficiency, simplify operations and lower TCO by enabling the pooling and sharing of storage resources. With its innovative split-path architecture, the HP SVSP provides centrally managed storage pooling and virtual volume provisioning of HP and non-HP storage resources. The HP SVSP enables high scalability, top performance, and high availability of all SAN resources. It brings substantial improvements to managing enterprise storage, reducing administration costs and improving asset utilization. It also offers a consistent set of storage and mobility services that improves flexibility, protects data, and decreases business risk. Services offered include volume management, data migration, copy services (clones and snapshots), synchronous and asynchronous mirroring and thin provisioning.

New with release SVSP v3.0, is the introduction of a new Management Graphical User Interface based on our leading Command View EVA technology. The new GUI is called "CommandView SVSP" and delivers a more consistent end-user experience for managing storage virtualization. Included with Command View SVSP, is the option to more tightly integrate the management of the EVA through the "SVSP Back-end LUN Provisioning Service".

Finally, with the HP StorageWorks SVSP Starter Kit, you can start experiencing the benefits of a virtualized storage infrastructure a lot faster. The Starter kit delivers all the outstanding capabilities and benefits of the SVSP technology, but in a more affordable, easier to adopt all-inclusive packaging, that includes all the necessary hardware, software, and startup services in a single easy to order part number. Customers will be able to easily expand the system as needed, in order to meet the requirements of their growing needs with the a-la-carte existing portfolio, for ultimate investment protection.

Volume Management

HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager delivers the basic virtualization functionality that allows customers to create and manage pools of capacity that span multiple arrays, usually from different vendors.

Included with the basic package, is a set of additional value add features:

  • The ability to perform heterogeneous data migration within the SVSP domain
  • The ability to deploy 2-way synchronous local mirrors for increasing application availability where needed
  • and finally the ability to import-in-place data sets for additional flexibility

SVSP Domain

Starting with Version 2.1 is the ability to stretch a domain across multiple computer rooms within the same metropolitan area and the ability to add up to three additional pairs of DPMs for improved load balancing and increased performance. Each domain can now have up to 4 DPM's. When a domain is stretched, one DMP of each pair and one VSM are located in each site. Added in V2.1.1 is a utility to help automate the recovery after a site failure in these stretched domains.

Asynchronous Bi-directional Remote Replication

HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Continuous Access is an asynchronous data replication (remote mirroring) solution to support disaster tolerance requirements. HP SVSP Continuous Access works across multiple arrays allowing remote mirroring between HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform management domains. SVSP copies data online and in real time via asynchronous replication to a remote SVSP domain. Additionally, data replication can be bi-directional and multi-site, meaning that a SVSP domain can be both a source and a destination for different data sets and supports up to three copies of the source data. Utilizing point-in-time (PiT) updates taken at the source site and copied to the destination site, HP SVSP Continuous Access is a complete disaster-tolerant storage solution that guarantees data integrity in the event of a storage system or site failure. HP SVSP features built-in Fibre Channel over iSCSI protocol services to enable HP SVSP Continuous Access data replication across IP networks.

Snapshot based asynchronous (async) replication is supported between SVSP domains for long distance replication. The use of asynchronous snapshots may reduce infrastructure costs by allowing customers to use less expensive infrastructure between sites. This is achieved by only replicating the changes that occurred over small intervals of time rather than replicating every write.

For additional information, please check the "HP StorageWorks SAN Design Guide" at: www.hp.com/go/SANDesignGuide

Thin Provisioning

HP StorageWorks SAN Virtualization Services Platform Thin Provisioning allows customers to create virtual disks with large apparent capacity that only use a much smaller amount of physical capacity. As data is written to these Thin Provisioned virtual disks, additional capacity is automatically allocated as necessary to store the new data. A thin volume can grow up to its maximum created size, until available capacity within the domain is consumed, or until the licensed capacity is consumed.

Local Replication

HP SVSP Business Copy provides local replication capabilities for local point-in-time (PiT) copies of data using snapshots of data based on changes to virtual disks. Users create PiT copies of their environment for potential future use. When they need it, they create a snapshot of that PiT which can be presented to a server for backup or data mining operations. Both are virtual copies of the data. PiTs are only viewable in the storage management interface, while snapshots are viewable by the hosts and the management interface. Snapclones are asynchronous PiT clones (copies) of an existing virtual disk. Snapclones might be used by customers who want to carve off a database for testing purposes. Snapshot and Snapclone consistency groups (of up to 32 members) are available to preserve write-order consistency across multiple virtual disks.

HP StorageWorks Virtualization Services Manager Command Line Interface

A server based scriptable interface is also available allowing the creation of scripts that interface with the VSM management application and business processes such as backup. Thus it's possible to create transactionally also known as application consistent copies of the data.

CommandView SVSP Back-end LUN Provisioning

Included with the SVSP CommandView is an application that interfaces directly with CommandView EVA to create and present automatically back-end LUs for the SVSP virtual environment, significantly simplifying the creation of pools across multiple EVA arrays.

Electronic Software Delivery

Electronic software is now available in most countries. HP recommends purchasing electronic products over physical products when available for faster delivery and the convenience of not having to manage-either file away or throw away-confidential paper licenses. For more information, please contact an HP representative.

HP SVSP Terms and Definitions

  • SVSP Domain: A virtualization subsystem in the SAN. The domain consists of two Virtualization Services Management (VSM) servers, two or four Data Path Modules, up to 128 array ports ( e.g. 32 4-port arrays, or 16 8-port arrays), and up to 512 hosts per pair of DPMs (2048 with 4 pair of DPMs).
  • Stretched SVSP Domain: An SVSP domain that has one half of the components at each site within the metropolitan area SAN. Maximum separation is ½ ms or 100 cable-km.
  • Virtual Disk Group: A collection of one or more SVSP virtual disks, logically grouped together, usually for data consistency reasons.
  • Asynchronous Mirror Group: A virtual disk group created for asynchronous remote mirroring.
  • Destination Domain: An SVSP domain with data replication functionality, which acts as the target for a given asynchronous remote mirror group.
  • Source Domain: An SVSP domain with data replication functionality, which acts as the originator for an asynchronous remote mirror group.
  • Virtual Disk: A designated amount of storage space, typically with redundancy, drawn from a storage pool.
  • Storage Pool: Capacity configured in the SVSP domain using Back-end logical units (e.g EVA virtual disks) from any supported array or stripe sets using multiple Back-end LUs..

Order based on the total capacity of data to be stored in Thin Provisioned Virtual disks. This total capacity must include the capacity of PiTs and Snapshots of the Thin Provisioned Virtual disks in addition to the capacity of the parent Virtual disk. Note that the capacity required will increase over time as data is written to the Virtual disk and the dependant PiTs and Snapshots, so it is best practice to order sufficient capacity to meet the anticipated needs and to routinely monitor usage until the next planned purchase.

Hardware Prerequisites
  • Minimum of one StorageWorks EVA and Command View EVA management server or one StorageWorks MSA and ACI management server are required per domain. Recommend one EVA or MSA per site if deploying a stretched domain
  • All arrays must be on the arrays support streams and running an approved version of array firmware, is appropriately licensed and comes with its version of management tools. See http://www.hp.com/storage/SPOCK for details.
  • HA dual-fabric environment (per site) and sufficient FC switch or director ports and FC cables for the SVSP DPM and VSMs. The VSMs each need four FC ports, and each DPM needs between four and sixteen FC ports. Thus as a minimum a simple SVSP installation needs at least sixteen FC ports (eight on each fabric) and a complex installation of two VSMs and four DPMs up to 138 FC ports (t68 on each fabric).
  • IP based intersite links when using Continuous Access of sufficient bandwidth to allow data replication to complete within the recovery point objective interval when using Continuous Access
  • Minimum two FC adapters per host or one dual-channel FC adapter per host -- see OS based streams on SPOCK for a list of supported servers by operating system
  • SVSP supported multi-path driver as required for the version of the operating system; or example:
    • Secure Path as appropriate for HPUX 11iv2
    • DSM for Windows - available for download from: http://www.hp.com
    • Linux QLogic multipath
  • Minimum one host per domain, recommend at least one host per site when deploying a stretched domain

Software Licensing Terms

Licenses (LTU) enable the capabilities of the SAN Virtualization Service Platform on EVA and other arrays that have been included in each SVSP domain. The available licenses are the SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager, SAN Virtualization Services Platform Thin Provisioning, SAN Virtualization Services Platform Business Copy, and SAN Virtualization Services Platform Continuous Access, and are all sold in 1-TB capacity increments. Without the correct type of HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform license, the volume management, thin provisioning and data replication features of SAN Virtualization Services Platform are not available for configuration or utilization. A license key must be purchased in order to enable HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform capabilities. You can reference the licensing part numbers in this QuickSpecs in the section titled Ordering Information.

The following is an overview of the ordering process for HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Management, SAN Virtualization Services Platform Business Copy, and SAN Virtualization Services Platform Continuous Access licenses.

  1. Customers can purchase SAN Virtualization Services Platform for supported arrays. At installation time the HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform domain must include at least one EVA array and may include up to 32 (4-port) arrays, 16 (8-port) arrays or some combination not to exceed a total of 128 array ports.
  2. SAN Virtualization Services Platform can include part or all of the available capacity of the EVA. For instance, if a customer has two EVA arrays with a total available capacity of 32 TB (after RAID), the customer can choose to include as little as 1 TB or as much as 32 TB in the SAN Virtualization Services Platform domain. Existing capacity not included in the SAN Virtualization Services Platform domain is managed via Command View EVA.
  3. SAN Virtualization Services Platform Business Copy requires a base license of SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager of equal or greater capacity than the total of the locally (within a single domain) replicated data.
  4. SAN Virtualization Services Platform Continuous Access requires a base license of equal or greater capacity of SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager for each remote copy of data involving two or more domains
  5. SAN Virtualization Services Platform Thin Provisioning requires a base license of SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager of equal or greater capacity than the physical capacity utilized. HP StorageWorks Virtualization Services Platform Thin Provisioning licenses enable specified Virtual disks to be provisioned space efficiently with physical capacity as required for the data that has been written. Thin Provisioning license capacity must be greater than or equal to the physical capacity used by the virtual disk and any PiT, Snapshot, or Snapclone. Over time, as data is written to the thinly provisioned Virtual disks, the Thin Provisioned license capacity requirements will increase.

NOTES:

  1. Both remote replication and local replication features are managed with Virtualization Services Manager. For all of these features to be enabled, HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager, HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform Continuous Access (remote replication features) and HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform Business Copy (local replication features) must be licensed. If any feature is not licensed, the action will fail and be logged in the event pane.
  2. HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform monitors the amount of data being managed and replicated as compared to the amount of data permitted to be replicated based on the License-To-Use (LTU) capacity. If this threshold is exceeded, a warning event will be issued. The user must add the appropriate LTU to continue using HP EVA Virtualization Services.
  3. Thin volumes subtract from the Thin Provisioning license based on used capacity.

HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform Order Scenario Examples

Example 1: Customer currently owns four EVA8400 arrays, each with 25 TB available unconfigured (raw) capacities, and wants to create a single SAN Virtualization Services Platform domain. Customer wants to create a domain of 32 TB, utilizing 8 TB of RAID 5 (10 TB unconfigured) from each array.
Answer: The customer orders one SAN Virtualization Services Platform Bundle and two servers for the Virtualization Services Manager. Customer must purchase thirty-two* 1 TB LTUs for SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager 16-32 TB band. Customer continues to manage capacity on each EVA8000 that is not included in the SAN Virtualization Services Platform domain via EVA Command View.

Alternatively the customer can purchase the starter kit plus 17 TB from the 16-32 band of VM to get to the 32 TB needed. The advantage is the fewer part numbers and the included services such as SVSP Business Copy and SVSP Thin Provisioning at the lower combined price.

Example 2:
The customer already has two EVA8100 arrays and purchases two new EVA8400 arrays and wants to implement SAN Virtualization Services Platform across those four arrays. In addition the customer needs to create point in time copies (SVSP Business Copies) of a five 10 TB databases (total 50 TB).
Answer: The customer would need to purchase one SAN Virtualization Services Platform Bundle, two servers for the Virtualization Services Managers and enough capacity LTUs to meet the capacity desired in the SVSP domain using the tier structure. In addition the customer needs to purchase fifty* 1 TB LTUs of SVSP Business Copy of band (33-64)

Alternatively the customer can purchase the starter kit plus 35 TB from the 33-64 band of VM to get to the 50 TB needed Business Copy LTUs. The advantage is the fewer part numbers and the included services such as 15 TB of SVSP Business Copy and SVSP Thin Provisioning at the lower combined price.

Example 3:
Customer has two EVA arrays (new or existing) at one site (Site A) and has two new or existing EVA arrays at another site (Site B) and wants to asynchronously replicate 50 TB of data between these two sites. Note there are no additional local copies of the data.
Answer: In addition to the SAN Virtualization Services Platform Bundle and VSM servers needed at each site, the customer must purchase one hundred * 1TB LTUs of SVSP Continuous Access licenses from the 65-100 band, planning to use 50 at each site.

Alternatively the customer can purchase two SVSP starter kits, plus the appropriate amount of volume management LTUs and the SVSP Continuous Access starter kit containing 10 TB of Continuous Access LTU. The remaining 90 TB of needed Continuous Access LTUs are purchased from the 65-100 band of SVSP Continuous Access LTUs.

Example 4:
Customer wants to create six* 2 TB (total 12 TB) virtual disks but anticipates that the capacity needs for these volumes will total less than 50% or 6 TB for the first year.
Answer: Customer purchases one SAN Virtualization Services Platform Bundle and two servers for the Virtualization Services Managers for each site as well as an appropriate amount of the Volume Manager Licenses needed to create the storage pools. In addition the customer must purchase the 6 * 1 TB (band 0-15) of the SAN Virtualization Services Platform Thin Provisioning License, The customer plans to monitor the usage of the volumes and expects to purchase additional Thin Provisioning licenses in a year to keep ahead of actual capacity usage.

Alternatively the customer can purchase the SVSP starter kit which includes 15 TB of SVSP Thin Provisioning LTUs. The advantage is the fewer part numbers and the included services such as SVSP Volume Management and SVSP Business Copy at the lower combined price.

Example 5: Customer wants to create a higher performance version of example 1 (32 TB of managed capacity).
Answer: The customer orders one SAN Virtualization Services Platform Bundle and two servers for the Virtualization Services Manager. Customer must purchase thirty-two* 1 TB LTUs for SAN Virtualization Services Platform Volume Manager of band (16-32) and three of the SVSP DPM 4 port LTU to enable all 16 ports on both DPMs.
