spacer Q1. What are Compaq Management Agents?
spacer A1.

Compaq Management Agents provide the instrumentation that enables fault, performance, and configuration management. Over 1000 parameters are monitored by Compaq Management Agents. The Management Agents provide the overall system status and direct access to in-depth subsystem information. The Agents help customers manage Compaq servers by monitoring processor status, internal temperature, fan status, etc. They also alert IT managers via screen-based and pager messages when there are problems. The Agents can help prevent problems before they have a significant impact on the system. Predictive fault management on Compaq ProLiant servers significantly reduces server down time.

spacer Q2. Where can I get the UCD SNMP RPMs which contain Compaq Management Agents for Linux Extension and Compaq MIBs?
spacer A2. With the release of Compaq Management Agents for Linux version 5.40, the UCD SNMP RPMs (which contain Compaq Management Agents Extension and Compaq MIBs) are available on Compaq Management CD version 5.4

spacer Q3. Can I install or upgrade the UCD SNMP for Compaq Management Agents for Linux without rebuilding snmpd?
spacer A3. The release of Compaq Management Agents for Linux version 5.4 simplifies the installation of Management Agents for Linux. Users can install or upgrade the UCD SNMP from Compaq without rebuilding snmpd. The Compaq Management Agents for Linux install script on Compaq Management CD version 5.4 installs or upgrades UCD SNMP RPMs as well as Agents RPMs. The binary "snmpd" undergoes exhaustive Quality Assurance testing by Compaq.

spacer Q4.What are the benefits of Compaq Management Agents for Linux install script?
spacer A4.

Compaq Management Agents for Linux install script performs install and upgrade of UCD SNMP RPMs and Agents RPMs in one execution. It eliminates the need to restart snmpd and agents separately or manually. Users have an option to restart snmpd and Agents after successful Installation or upgrade. This implementation allows full SNMP configuration of the Management Agents during installation.

Management Agents for Linux are web-enabled. Users can browse directly and securely to access information on Compaq ProLiant servers. They can easily obtain system, subsystem, and component health status, as well as detailed configuration information. The advantage of web-enabling the Agents is to minimize the network bandwidth utilized for obtaining management information. Because Compaq Management Agents for Linux support a convenient Web-based interface, systems management is available to administrators from virtually any location.

spacer Q6.Which events can change the overall status of a server?
spacer A6. The Integrated Management Log (IML) status has been refined to better reflect the overall status of the server. The events that can now change the overall status of a server, as seen in Compaq Insight Manager 7 and System Management Homepage, are Memory errors, Accelerator errors, CPU errors, Host bus errors, EISA bus errors, PCI bus errors, Expansion slot events, Power subsystem events, Automatic server recovery events, Operating system events, and Unrecoverable system errors. This change eliminates redundancies in status reporting.

  • Make sure that you are logged in as Operator or Administrator.
  • Go to the [Device Summary] page.
  • Click the [Turn {Off/On}] button (depends on current status)
spacer Q9. What are the components of the Compaq Management Agents for Servers?
spacer A9. The Compaq Management Agents for Servers generally are made up of 4 components - the Compaq Foundation Agents, the Compaq Storage Agents, the Compaq Server Agents, and the Compaq NIC Agents. The Compaq Foundation Agents for Windows also has four additional components - the Compaq Web Agent, the Compaq OS Management Component, the Compaq WMI Agent and the Compaq Event Notifier Agent. Some of the Agents are a single piece and not split into components.

spacer Q10. Are all the components of the Agents installed by default?
spacer A10. During an install of the Compaq Management Agents for Servers for Windows, the Compaq WMI Agent and the Compaq Agent Event Notifier are not installed by default. The user has to make a selection to install these components.

spacer Q11. How can I install the Compaq Event Notifier, Compaq OS Management, and Compaq WMI Agent?
spacer A11. When the Foundation Agent package is launched from the Compaq Support Paq or the Compaq Remote Deployment Utility (RDU), it uses the Express mode installation path. As a result, only the base Foundation Agent is installed. Value-added software such as the Compaq Event Notifier, WMI Agent and OS Management must be installed outside of the Support Paq or RDU.

To install one or more of the value-added software, use one of the following two (2) methods: using the Compaq Management CD or using the Compaq Support Paq. Below are the steps for installing any one of these pieces of software for each installation method.

spacer Q12. What functions are carried out by the different components?
spacer A12. Compaq Foundation Agent collects information for the host server, including clustering, software version, and external MIB status. It also provides threshold support.
Compaq Server Agent collects and displays configuration information on the system and the Remote Insight Board.
Compaq Storage Agent displays information on the Mass Storage Subsystems configured on the system being managed. The agent collects information from drive array, SCSI, and IDE subsystems.
Compaq NIC Agent displays information on logical Compaq Network Interface Controllers (NICs) that are configured on the system being managed.
All the agents generate SNMP alarms when thresholds on key parameters are exceeded.
The Compaq Event Notifier forwards alarms generated at the system via electronic mail using SMTP.
The Compaq WMI Agent collects (only for Windows NT and Windows 2000) collects and displays information from WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation)
The Compaq OS Management component (separate component on Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems) monitors key Windows NT parameters, and generates SNMP alarms when thresholds are exceeded.

spacer Q13. What are the advantages of the Web-Enabled Agents?
spacer A13. The Compaq Management Agents are web-enabled agents. They are self-describing and enable access from anywhere there is network access. Using a standard browser, a user can directly access a Compaq system to obtain system, subsystem and component health status as well as detailed information. There is no need for another application to render the information provided by the agents. The web-enabled agents also provide the foundation for integrating Compaq hardware instrumentation, system status monitoring, and event notification into third party Enterprise management environments.

spacer Q14. Are the agents different for each Operating system?
spacer A14.

Compaq offers the broadest range of Operating system support. The agents for Microsoft Windows are different from the Novell NetWare Agents, but the agents for Microsoft Windows are the same for Windows NT and Windows 2000. The Novell NetWare agent is the same for all versions of NetWare. Separate Agents cover Linux, SCO UnixWare, SCO OpenServer , Compaq OpenVMS, and Compaq Tru64 UNIX.

spacer Q15. Do the Compaq Management Agents monitor only the hardware environment?
spacer A15. No, Compaq has raised the bar in base level manageability by adding OS management for NetWare and Windows Operating System environments to its superior hardware availability management. Users are able to get an integrated hardware and software view of their Windows and NetWare environments via the web-enabled Compaq Management Agents. The OS information within the Compaq Management Agents enhances the quality and detail of information reported by the agents, enabling users to better manage their environments.

spacer Q16. What is the Compaq OS Management Component??
spacer A16.

The Compaq OS management component monitors the Operating system parameters. Currently OS management is available for Microsoft Windows and Novell NetWare. With Compaq OS Management component users are able to monitor and set thresholds on key Windows NT parameters. OS Management for NetWare is made available by integration of information from the NetWare Management Agent that is shipped with the NetWare Operating system. Threshold messages are sent via SNMP to the Compaq Insight Manager 7. The OS information can be accessed via a browser, as a subsystem in the web-enabled agent. Windows NT and NetWare operating system monitoring capability, in addition to hardware monitoring, allows faster determination of the root cause of system and application faults by being able to quickly determine if an event is caused by hardware or software.
