Answers

Common Questions
Q1. How can I get the System Management Home Page v2.0?
A1. The System Management Home Page v2.0 is available as part of the ProLiant Support Pack shipped with SmartStart 7.20 and higher, and with the Integrity Support Pack shipped with the Smart Setup CD v3.2. HP Support Packs can also be downloaded from HP.com for ProLiant servers and Integrity Servers.

Installed as part of an HP Support Pack, the System Management Home Page will install automatically along with the most recent and optimal versions of HP Insight Management Agents, HP Version Control Agents, HP Insight Diagnostics and other HP plug-in management tools.

Q2. What management tools can be integrated into the HP System Management Homepage v2.0?
A2. The HP Insight Management Agents, HP Version Control Agents, HP Insight Diagnostics, Array Configuration Utility, Integrated Lights-Out, Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition and the Intelligent Networking Pack can all integrate into the System Management Homepage.

For the most secure and optimum configuration, it is recommend that the System Management Homepage v2.0 and associated integrated plug-ins be installed using the ProLiant Support Pack or Integrity Support Pack.

Q3. Can I use Insight Management Agents and other HP plug-ins prior to SmartStart v7.20 and the Integrity server Smart Setup v3.20 with the HP System Management Homepage v2.0?
A3. Yes, the new System Management Homepage v2.0 will support and operate with earlier versions of Insight Management Agents, Version Control Agents, Survey, Insight Diagnostics and other HP management plug-ins. However, for optimum configuration and the most secure operations HP strongly recommends installing Insight Management Agents and other plug-ins for the System Management Homepage from the ProLiant or Integrity Support Packs.

NOTE: One of the key benefits of System Management Homepage v2.0 is a simplified and more secure architecture that uses a common HTTP service for browser based access; this replaces the previous model that required an HTTP service for each integrated plug-in to the System Management Homepage. By using older agents and other plug-in tools prior to those delivered with the HP ProLiant or Integrity Support Packs, the managed server will still contain multiple physical HTTP services, instead of a single access component. This scenario has the potential to expose multiple security vulnerabilities that may require individual patching as new SSL and HTTP updates are made available.

For the most secure and optimum configuration, HP strongly recommends that the System Management Homepage v2.0, Insight Management Agents and associated management plug-ins be installed using the ProLiant Support Pack or the Integrity Support Pack.

These support packs include the following agents and management tool versions.

HP Software Component Windows Platform Linux Platform
  ProLiant Servers
  Server Foundation Agents 7.20 7.20
  Storage Agent 7.20 7.20
  NIC Agent 7.20 7.20
  Insight Diagnostics 7.0 7.0
  Version Control Agent 2.1 2.1
Version Control Repository Manager 2.1 ----
  Array Configuration Utility 7.20 7.20
  Integrity Servers
  Server Foundation Agents 7.20 7.20
  Storage Agent 7.11 7.11
  NIC Agent 7.20 7.20
  Insight Diagnostics 7.0 7.0
  Version Control Agent 2.1 2.1
Version Control Repository Manager 2.1 ----
  Array Configuration Utility 7.20 7.20

Q4. If I use Insight Management Agents and other HP plug-in management tools prior to SmartStart v7.20 and the Integrity server Smart Setup v3.20, can I still take advantage of the OS-based authentication introduced with the HP System Management Homepage v2.0?
A4. Yes. If earlier versions of Insight Management Agents and other plug-ins are used, prior to those highlighted in A1 and A3, administrators can take full advantage of the OS-based authentication introduced with System Management Homepage 2.0.

Installing System Management Homepage v2.0 with older Insight Management Agents and other management plug-ins overwrites the unique login and password authentication model used in the previous 1.0 version. The v2.0 model is based upon authentication with predefined Windows OS groups and users, or predefined users accessible via the Programmable Authentication Module (PAM) on Linux platforms.

Q5. Does HP System Management Homepage v2.0 support access authentication based upon LDAP or other directory-based groups?
A5. System Management Homepage v2.0 does not support LDAP or other directory-based authentication, but this functionality is planned for a subsequent release of the HP System Management Homepage.

Q6. Can I use the HP System Management Homepage to manage servers that are not running Windows or Linux operating systems?
A6. The System Management Homepage is currently supported only on Windows and Linux operating systems. Customers wishing to manage servers running NetWare, SCO UnixWare, OS/2, and other operating systems should continue to use the existing web-enabled management agents for those platforms. HP continues to evaluate these operating systems as future candidates for the System Management Homepage.

Q7. How can I access the HP System Management Homepage?
A7. The System Management Homepage can be accessed directly using standard browser technology, or via HP Systems Insight Manager. The user guide for the System Management Homepage provides configuration and usage details associated with the available access methods.

Q8. What operating systems are supported with the HP System Management Homepage v2.0?
A8. The System Management Homepage supports the following operating systems on ProLiant and Integrity server platforms:

ProLiant Servers

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with SP 1 or later
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Web Edition RTM with SP1 or later
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition RTM with SP1
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SBS, Standard and Premium
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with SP 4 or later
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP 4 or later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 for x86, AMD64 and Intel EM64T
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 8 for x86
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 9 for x86, AMD64 and Intel EM64T

  • Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 Update 3 or later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 2 or later
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 8 with Service Pack 3 or later

The System Management Homepage is currently supported on Windows and Linux platforms. However, users can access the HP Insight Management Agents for NetWare, SCO UnixWare, Tru64 Unix, and OpenVMS directly through either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

Q9. What browsers are supported for use with the HP System Management Homepage v2.0?
A9. The System Management Homepage supports the following browser applications for Windows and Linux platforms:
  • Mozilla 1.5
  • Mozilla 1.6
  • Mozilla 1.7
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Windows Only)

Q10. Can I access the System Management Homepage from third party enterprise platforms?
A10. Yes. To help simplify the management of HP hardware resources from within a broader enterprise environment, HP develops a number of integration solutions designed to help identify and monitor HP servers within a wide range of popular enterprise management platforms. HP integration solutions provide ready-access to the System Management Homepage to display in-depth HP server data. HP integration modules for enterprise platforms can be downloaded at no charge from www.hp.com/servers/integration.

Q11. What is the difference between version 1.x and version 2.0?
A11. System Management Homepage v2.0 provides enhanced security and streamlined operations for ProLiant and Integrity servers running Windows or Linux:

Secure Access and Authentication
  • Access to the System Management Homepage via OS-based / SSL-secure authentication on Windows and Linux platforms; replaces individual login accounts and passwords.
  • Simplified and more manageable access model based upon defined Linux and Windows users.
Simplified Management Architecture
  • Browser-based access to the System Management Homepage (SMH) interface and integrated plug-in management tools via a single HTTP / HTTPS service; replaces previous SMH v1.0 model that required an individual HTTP service for each SMH plug-in.
  • Updates to HTTP / SSL security and HP management plug-ins can be applied to the System Management Homepage without having to replace or reinstall Insight Management Agents, Version Control Agents or other HP management plug-ins.
Advanced Access Control
  • NIC binding and other advanced configuration features enable administrators to have more control over individual and group access to the System Management Homepage.
  • Supports OS-defined users and groups on Windows and Linux platforms.
  • Group configuration and setup via HP Systems Insight Manager.
