Overview

As corporate security policies and government regulations increase the requirements for secured access and protection of IT assets, companies and institutions are implementing more advanced identity management solutions. Remote control products are among the targets of IT security departments for increased secure access control.

HP has provided consistent leadership in offering a choice of security options to meet the needs of customers seeking more centralized directory based Lights-Out management access control as well as customers requiring more advanced strong authentication. Now HP offers three secured access alternatives for enterprise environments.

Two-factor authentication Strong authentication using smart-cards and USB key tools
Schema extended directory Robust directory authentication and authorization for Windows and Linux
Directory-based authentication & iLO-based authorization
Schema-free directory Simplified directory authentication without schema extensions
Directory-based authentication & iLO-based authorization

HP offers two methods of directory integration, a simplified schema-free solution for companies and institutions which are unable to modify directory schema and the lower maintenance, schema extension approach for situations where schema changes are permitted. Both methods allow IT managers to improve security with individual username/password logon and increase the efficiency of user administration in central, scalable databases.

For a growing number of IT environments, traditional directory based security is not enough. For those situations, iLO Advanced licenses also offer two-factor authentication to iLO and iLO 2 management processors using smart card and USB flash key identity devices. This provides the strong authentication needed to meet corporate security policies and government regulations for identity management. Two-factor authentication is also offered on RILOE II cards.

The table below lists the security support and minimum firmware versions available with Lights-Out management products.

iLO 2 with iLO Advanced License iLO with iLO Advanced License RILOE II
Schema free directory Firmware v. 1.11 Microsoft Active Directory Firmware v. 1.80 Microsoft Active Directory Firmware v. 1.20 Microsoft Active Directory
Schema extended directory Firmware v. 1.00 or later Microsoft Active Directory & Novell eDirectory Firmware v. 1.40 or later Microsoft Active Directory & Novell eDirectory Firmware v. 1.10 or later Microsoft Active Directory & Novell eDirectory
Two-factor authentication Firmware v. 1.11 Microsoft Internet Explorer Firmware v. 1.80 Microsoft Internet Explorer Firmware v. 1.20 Microsoft Active Directory

HP makes it easy to integrate iLO, iLO 2 and RILOE II into directory or identity management infrastructures. Applications are available to migrate installed management processors to either directory integration method. Also, a separate application is available to install the management console snap-in and extend customer's existing directory schema.
