General
Q1. What is the difference between the Insight Control Environment and the Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem?
A1. The Insight Control Environment and Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem are Insight Control software licensing options. Customers should install the software contained on the Insight Control Management DVD once and purchase Insight Control Environment licenses to manage their ProLiant ML/DL servers and Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem licenses to manage their HP BladeSystem infrastructure. The Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem enables select features not available in the standard Insight Control Environment package.
Q2. What is the difference between the Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem and the Insight Control Data Center Edition?
A2. The Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem is the replacement for the Insight Control Data Center Edition. It updates monitoring, deployment, performance management and patch management capabilities delivered with the Insight Control Data Center Edition. In addition it adds new remote management, new power management, and new virtual machine management capabilities.

Starting on July 9, 2007, the Insight Control Data Center Edition will only be made available for sale with c7000 enclosures that feature the current 2" LCD display. It will not be available with c7000 enclosures featuring the new 3" LCD display or as an independently purchasable software option.
Q3. What is the difference between the Insight Control Environment and ProLiant Essentials?
A3. ProLiant Essentials are individual product offerings targeted at specific management functions. The Insight Control Environment delivers improved control and flexibility in managing your ProLiant infrastructure by combining the capabilities of HP Systems Insight Manager and select ProLiant Essentials software products into an easy-to-install, easy-to-license, and attractively priced software package.

While HP will continue to offer select ProLiant Essentials software offerings, the Insight Control Environment and Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem will offer more management capabilities at a more attractive price point than when purchased a la carte.
Q4. Can I manage non-HP servers with the Insight Control Environment?
A4. Yes. While the Insight Control Environment is tuned to manage ProLiant and BladeSystem environments, it will discover and identify non-HP x86 servers running supported Windows, Linux, and NetWare operating systems. It will link to native web-based management running on those systems, and through management standards such as WMI, WBEM, and SNMP, the Insight Control Environment is can collect inventory data and receive and decode hardware alerts from non-HP systems.
Q5. Can I integrate the Insight Control Environment with my HP OpenView, Microsoft Operations Manager, Tivoli Enterprise, CA Unicenter,or other enterprise management software?
A5. Yes. HP provides in-depth integration with HP OpenView, Microsoft Operations Manager, Tivoli Enterprise, or CA Unicenter. A number of other enterprise management software vendors also deliver integration with HP management tools. To learn more about these modules or to download them, click here.
Availability & Purchase
Q1. How do I buy the Insight Control Environment?
A1. The Insight Control Environment is licensed on a per-server basis. First purchase the number of licenses that you need. You can purchase a single license, 10-pack license, or a flexible quantity license. When purchasing the Insight Control Environment for BladeSystem, you also have the option of purchasing licenses with your HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure. After you purchase the required number of licenses, you can either download a copy of the Insight Control Management DVD ISO image, or you can purchase an Insight Control Management DVD media kit. You will only require one DVD download or media package.
Q2. Why should I buy the Insight Control Environment instead of individual ProLiant Essentials software packages?
A2. The Insight Control Environment simplifies the process of purchasing, installing, and configuring the software you need to effectively manage your ProLiant and BladeSystem environment. It eliminates the process of having to research and select individual offerings and to deploy and maintain individual packages. The Insight Control Environment is also priced at a discount to a la carte offerings.
Q3. If I have already purchased ProLiant Essentials for some of my servers, how do I upgrade to the Insight Control Environment?
A3. Upgrading your environment is easy. The Insight Control Environment installer will detect previous versions of HP Systems Insight Manager and ProLiant Essentials software running on your central management servers (see installation poster for details) and facilitate an in-place upgrade of each component. In instances where servers in the environment have already been licensed for one or more of the ProLiant Essential products, you may decide not to apply Insight Control Environment licenses to avoid license duplication. In these cases, you should contact your HP or HP partner sales representative to purchase any additional software licenses you require.
Q4. How do I update the Insight Control Environment as new capabilities are released?
A4. The Insight Control Environment toships with the Insight Control Management Software update utility facilitate identification of available updates. Simply run the utility from the Insight Control Management DVD or within HP Systems Insight Manager and it will identify available updates and where they can be downloaded.
Customers must have a valid Software Technical Support and Update Service contract to download Insight Control Environment updates for purchases made after July 9, 2007.
