General
Q1. What servers does the Insight Power Manager support?
A1. IPM supports all ProLiant servers that contain a power meter. That list includes most of the latest G5 servers and c-Class blades. For a detailed listing of the systems with a power meter consult the IPM support matrix.
Q2. What operating systems are supported on the managed target?
A2. Since it is a hardware-based solution, the Insight Power Manager manages a host running any operating system that is supported by ProLiant servers. That includes x86 as well as x64 operating systems.

Q4. Is it important to monitor my server power consumption or heat output?
A4. Absolutely - You cannot manage what you cannot measure. Accurate measurement is the first step in taking complete control of your power and thermal management. The Insight Power Manager gives you the necessary tools to do just that.

Service & Support
Q1. How do I get support for the HP Insight Power Manager?
A1. Starting on July 9, 2007, the HP Insight Power Manager will include one year of 24 x 7 Software Technical Support and Update Service. This service provides rapid access to trained software support staff as well as proactive management and delivery of software updates.
Q2. What is HP Software Technical Support and Update Service?
A2. Starting in July of 2007, Insight Power Manager will include one year of 24 x 7 HP Software Technical Support and Update Service. This service provides access to HP technical resources for assistance in resolving software implementation or operations problems. The service also provides access to software updates and reference manuals either in electronic form or on physical media as they are made available from HP. With this service, customers will benefit from expedited problem resolution as well as proactive management and delivery of Insight Power Manager updates.
Q3. How do I extend my support contract following the first year of 24 x 7 Software Technical Support and Update Service?
A3. Customers that register their Software Technical Support and Update Service with HP will be contacted prior to service contract expiration with a reminder to extend their service contract. While customers are not required to extend their contract, continued access to software updates will not be possible once the first year of support and update service expires.

Note: customers that purchase Insight Control software directly from HP will automatically be registered for the Software Technical Support and Update Service. Customers that purchase software through an HP partner can register on line.
Functionality
Q1. Does power capping have any dependencies?
A1. Yes, on supported and properly licensed systems you must have:
  • a processor that has HP Power Regulator support
  • iLO 1.30 firmware (or later) installed
  • ,
  • a system BIOS version that is dated 5/1/2007 (or later), and
  • for blade servers and workstations, Onboard Administrator 1.20 or later firmware. For more information see the support matrix.
Q2. Is this product dependent on any other licensees?
A2. Yes, the Insight Power Manager requires an iLO Advanced or iLO Select license to retrieve data from managed systems.
Q3. Does the product have the capability to power up or down remote systems based on schedules?
A3. Using HP Systems Insight Manger in combination with the Integrated Lights-Out Management processor, multiple servers can be powered up and down on a schedule.
Q4. Does the product have the ability to monitor and report on power consumption for each remote system?
A4. Yes, the HP Insight Power Manager has the ability to provide actual peak and average power consumption for monitored ProLiant and Integrity servers for up to 3 years. This information is graphically displayed in an easy to read format, and can be exported in CSV format for custom reporting. Key power and thermal metrics are summarized and reported in a convenient dashboard.
Q5. Can the user temporarily override the Power Management settings?
A5. Yes, user’s can change power management settings based on the time of day or manually override a policy that has been applied.
Licensing
Q1. How do I access my license activation key?
A1. Starting in November 2007, a license entitlement certificate will be delivered in place of a license activation key. The license entitlement certificate will be delivered via physical shipment for existing product numbers (with the exception of tracking licenses) and via e-mail for the new electronic license product numbers. It will contain information needed to redeem license activation key(s) online or via fax. This new electronic redemption process will allow for easier license management and better service and support tracking. For more information, please visit http://www.hp.com/go/ICe-license.
Q2. What is an electronic license to use or E-Delivery LTU?
A2. An electronic license is a new product offering which can be purchased as a single license or as multiple licenses with a single activation key. The customers will receive a license entitlement certificate via e-mail. The license entitlement certificate must be redeemed online or via fax in order to obtain the license activation key(s). Electronic license part numbers are only available through limited points of sale; if not available through your usual sales path, you may order the equivalent physical part number.
