Answers

General
Q1. What is the function of the HP ProLiant server and BladeSystem management packs for System Center Operations Manager 2007?
A1. The HP ProLiant Server and BladeSystem Management Packs for System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) automates state/alert monitoring for HP ProLiant servers and BladeSystems within SCOM. They include predefined server and BladeSystem groups, event processing rules and tasks. These enable IT administrators to streamline operations and ensure increased systems availability by monitoring key resources for Microsoft Windows environments and HP ProLiant server and BladeSystem hardware platforms through a common SCOM console.

Q2. What are the benefits of installing HP management packs for System Center Operations Manager 2007?
A2.
  • Identify, group, and display HP ProLiant servers and Blades within the System Center Operations Manager Console using Microsoft's System Definition Model (SDM)
  • Illustrate relationships of HP ProLiant servers and subsystems with HP server state rolled up to the highest level for quicker root cause
  • Monitor and display the state of HP ProLiant servers and BladeSystems and the associated management services
  • Proactively identify, translate, and display HP hardware events as Operations Manager alerts
  • Provide browser-based links to HP management tools for hardware resource management and advanced remote administration from within the Operations Manager console

Q3. What do these versions of the Management Packs offer customers using the MOM 2005 Management Packs?
A3. These HP Management Packs have been written specifically for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 and will take advantage of features only available in Operations Manager 2007. The HP Server Management Packs for Operations Manager 2007 will not work with MOM 2005, due to fundamental changes in the Microsoft product. The management packs for MOM 2005 are still supported but will not work with Operations Manager 2007.

Q4. Do I need HP Systems Insight Manager now that I'm using System Center Operations Manager?
A4. The HP Server management packs rely on other components provided by HP to create a complete view of the servers being managed. These components are part of HP's Insight Control management software (aka Insight software), and of HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM). HP recommends that these components be included by ensuring that the free ProLiant Support Packs and HP SIM modules are loaded on each managed server. There is no requirement for any of the additional SIM components, but some of them might be very useful in managing your servers.

Implementing both Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 and HP Systems Insight Manager provides well-integrated and complementary benefits for managing adaptive enterprise environments.

Q5. How do I get ProLiant Server and BladeSystem management packs?
A5.

The HP ProLiant Server and BladeSystem Management Packs for SCOM 2007 can be downloaded from hp.com using the links on the main product page.
