Licensing General

A license enables a server, either a physical server or a virtual machine, to be deployed and managed by the Altiris Deployment Server. One license is required for each server being managed. After a license is applied to a server, it cannot be removed or transferred to another server. This includes a blade server installed using the Rip-and-Replace procedure. The replacement server automatically utilizes the original server license for user convenience. However, to be legally licensed, a separate license must be purchased for each server.

A license file contains licenses for a predetermined number of servers. Purchased license files are not specific to HP Insight Control server deployment releases. One license file cannot be shared among multiple Deployment Servers. To view the number of licensed nodes from the Deployment Server console, click Help > About.

To manage HP servers, you must purchase Insight Control server deployment licenses from HP. To manage other computers, you must purchase Altiris Deployment Solution licenses. Server licenses cannot be used on a non-Insight Control server deployment Deployment Server.

With licenses starting July 2007, one year of 24 x 7 HP Software Technical Support and Update Service is included. This service provides access to HP technical resources for help in resolving software implementation or operations problems. The service also provides access to software updates and reference manuals either in electronic form or on physical media, as they are made available from HP. Additionally, a license gives the rights to use the ProLiant and Integrity features, and Microsoft Windows Pre-Boot (WinPE) automation environment that are installed with Insight Control server deployment.

License Types

Applying a License File

To apply a license file during a first-time installation or upgrade, select the appropriate licenseing option during the Deployment Server installation.

To add a license file to an existing installation,

1. Shut down all Deployment Consoles and Deployment Web Consoles.
2. Click Start > Programs > Altiris>Deployment Solution > Product Licensing Utility.
3. Enter the path to the new license file in the Activation Key File Information field, and click Next.
4. Follow the instructions to apply the additional licenses.

NOTE: The Altiris Product License Utility has a limit of no more than 80 license files. When this limit is exceeded, the utility will display the error message
"Maximum license slots has been exceeded".
The separate license files will need to be combined.

To replace licenses in an existing installation with a new license file that has licenses that were combined or transferred, follow the steps above for adding a license file. At step 3, select Replace all existing license Activation Keys with this new Activation Key.

How to Combine or Split License Files

To combine or split license files, contact the licensing administration centers for your region at www.webware.hp.com. Have your registered email address, license file(s), and/or order number details available.
NOTE: Old license file(s) will become invalid and cannot be used later.

How to Obtain Replacement Licenses for a Lost License File

For licenses purchased before July 10, 2008, refer to Knowledge Base article How To Obtain Replacement Licenses For A Lost License File (Article 134).

For licenses purchased after July 10, 2008

1. Browse to www.webware.hp.com.
2. Click Manage Licenses.
3. Enter the email address and password.
4. Click Sign-In.
5. Obtain the replacement license file.

NOTE: These procedures may be used to obtain a new license file if the registration email did not contain the license file attachment because your network is setup to remove zip file email attachments.
