Standard and legacy USB support for ProLiant servers.

|
HP provides both standard USB support and legacy USB support. Standard support is provided by the operating system (OS) through the appropriate USB device drivers. HP provides support for USB devices prior to the operating system loading through legacy USB support, which is enabled by default in the system ROM.
The following operating systems versions and later versions have native USB support at the OS level: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Red Hat 7.2 Professional Server and later, Red Hat 2.1 Advanced Server and later, SLES7 and later, United Linux 1.0 and Novell NetWare 6 and later and SCO UnixWare 7.1.3, 7.1.4 and SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 & 6 and later. For these operating systems, the OS USB device driver controls USB support. Check your OS documentation for information on specific USB support.
Legacy USB support provides USB functionality in environments where there normally is not USB support. Specifically, HP provides legacy USB functionality at:
- Power On Self Test (POST)
- ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU)
- Diagnostics
- Environments which do not support USB natively
USB devices support hot-plug at the OS level. USB devices also support hot-plugging the devices in legacy USB mode, but this feature requires additional ROM support. The table below shows what minimum ROM version is required for hot-plug functionality of USB devices in legacy mode. Servers that support legacy USB are enabled by default. To disable legacy USB support on all servers that ship prior to 2004, complete USB functionality must be disabled by disabling the USB Host Controller in RBSU under PCI Devices. On most new servers that ship in 2004 or later, USB support can be disabled in different ways. The USB host controller can be completely disabled, or the user has the option to disable just the external USB ports and the USB host controller will still be enabled. The latter will allow continued use of iLO / RILOE virtual devices. When the external USB ports are disabled, all external USB ports are disabled, both front and back. There is also an option on servers in 2004 to allow disabling legacy support. This will allow use of devices during runtime that are not officially supported in legacy mode.
Legacy USB support requires a system ROM that includes this functionality. All servers have varying levels of USB support. Refer to the table below to see if your server supports keyboard, mouse, floppy, CD-ROM, and to determine if hot-plugging the floppy and CD in legacy mode is supported.
Some servers shipping in 2004 or later will include legacy support for a USB drive key. Legacy USB drive key support requires a system ROM that includes the ability to initialize and boot a USB drive key. All servers have varying levels of USB support. Refer to the table below to see if your server supports USB drive key in legacy mode.
HP provides a variety of tools that take advantage of legacy USB drive key support to perform tasks that were typically performed with a floppy drive or CD ROM.

- HP USB Key ROMPAQ Setup Utility - creates a bootable USB drive key containing the Systems ROMPaq Firmware Upgrade for HP ProLiant Servers. New to the ProLiant USB line-up for 2007, the HP USB Floppy Drive Key provides the functionality of two USB devices in one compact package. The device functions as both a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed flash storage device and a USB floppy. The key is offered in both 1GB and 256MB storage capacities. Lightweight and compact, the USB Floppy Drive Key is ideal for users who need both a portable mass storage device provided by a standard USB Drive Key and a USB floppy drive.

Refer to the table below to see if your server supports keyboard, mouse, floppy, CD-ROM or drive key in legacy mode, and to determine if hot-plugging the floppy and CD in legacy mode is supported. USB devices must be supported by the OS vendor to function properly during an OS installation. Some newer operating systems support the use of USB devices during installation. In general, Windows 2003, Windows 2000 SP4 slipstream media and Linux support the use of USB devices during installation. For information on specific device support, please refer to your OS vendor.
While some OS's support USB devices during installation, others do not. For example, an OS-supported USB floppy drive cannot be used to provide an updated driver at the F6 prompt during a based media Windows 2000 OS installation even if the device is supported in legacy mode. The reason for this is because Windows 2000 installation loads a USB support file during installation that supports a very small number of USB devices, but then loads an extended support file once the OS installation is complete. Miscrosoft will support the use of USB devices during installation with Windows 2000 SP4 or later slipstream OS media. HP provides a work around for this issue with SoftPaq #21828, which can be downloaded from HP's website. This SoftPaq provides a user with the ability to use newer USB devices to provide an updated driver during installation. For specific details on how to use the SoftPaq, please refer to the readme file associated with the download.
The newly supported USB drive key cannot be used even when formatted as a floppy to provide a driver update during a Microsoft Windows installation for 2000 or 2003. The device can be used once the operating system has loaded and loads the necessary USB driver. The system ROM will support the device prior to OS load.
Support for USB devices is dependent upon OS support. These devices are supported once the OS device driver is loaded. Check the OS documentation for information on specific USB support.
HP tests and recommends the use of USB devices as detailed in the table above. Some USB devices may behave inappropriately due to variations in USB hardware implementation by different manufacturers. If this issue occurs, try a different USB device. The USB devices that have been officially tested and are supported by hp include:

Review the product QuickSpecs to view and purchase USB devices that HP has tested and recommends using with ProLiant servers. The options listed above may not be supported on all ProLiant servers.
All USB devices will work with ProLiant hardware at the OS level if supported by the OS vendor. HP is working on adding support for additional USB devices in legacy mode such as hubs.
The USB ports on the server will work under an operating system that natively supports USB. The USB devices will not work until the OS and appropriate device drivers are loaded.
