Your Foundation Pack contains the software you need to get your HP BladeSystem of ProLiant server out of the box, set up, fully configured and loaded with your choice of operating system and managed within your IT infrastructure. Optional ProLiant Essentials and Insight Control software may be purchased to supplement your Foundation Pack in order to extend your management capabilities.

ProLiant Essentials and Insight Control software is available directly from HP and from HP partners. HP wants you to be able to include the software you require whenever you purchase your ProLiant servers and other options. Of course, ProLiant Essentials and Insight Control software can be bought separately as well. Since you have several packaging options available to choose from, the following information should help you make a choice.
First, you need to decide which offering is right for you. Consider the following:
If:
| • |
You want one activation key to use for all licenses of a product you might purchase over the next one to three years. |
| • |
You have a large installed base of ProLiants and are frequently adding more ProLiants to your infrastructure on which you want to run the software. |
| • |
You anticipate needing many hundreds or thousands of copies of the software over time. |
| • |
You have a sales contract already in place with HP that you'd like to extend to include the software. |
| • |
You can tolerate a contract negotiation period prior to being able to deploy and use your software products. |
|
If:
| • |
You want a single activation key to use for the entire quantity of licenses you purchase at any given time and expect to make a few such purchases over the course of a year |
| • |
You have an installed base of ProLiant servers on which you want to run the software and need to make a one-time purchase for that quantity of licenses |
| • |
You prefer not to establish a sales contract for ProLiant Essentials and Insight Control software but still want to minimize the number of activation keys and materials you receive with each order |
|
If:
| • |
You need just a few individual copies of the software |
|
| … then choose an Activation Key Agreement |
…
then choose a fixed quantity, multi-license or flexible quantity kit for your purchase |
… then choose single kits for your purchase |
Most products ship as license-only packs that don't include any media. These are convenient for customers already in possession of the necessary media, who purchase HP Media Kits, or who download copies of the product images from the HP web site and create their own installation media.
In limited worldwide regions and through select points of sale, HP has available electronic license offerings (E-LTUs) which are similar to flexible quantity kits. E-LTUs are appropriate for customers who want fast fulfillment of their order without the need for any physical delivery and without the corresponding physical logistics constraints. The maximum quantity for purchase of a flexible quantity pack or an E-LTU is 50,000.
If you’ve decided upon an Activation Key Agreement (AKA), there are additional actions to perform:
- You must establish a sales contract directly with HP. This can be a protracted process involving legal negotiations. Consult with your HP sales representative or submit the AKA request form regarding initiation of the contracting process.
- You must prepare to administer and control the master activation keys you will be issued by HP. These keys provide the ability to install and activate the software for a target hardware platform. Their dissemination within your IT organization requires careful planning because each usage of a master key should be preceded by the purchase of an appropriate tracking license.
- You must ready your purchase process to order AKA tracking licenses for each instance where you need to use the software. In many cases customers want licenses to use ProLiant Essentials and Insight Control software on new ProLiant servers they plan to purchase, and their planning should include the addition of the AKA tracking license part numbers to their standard server purchase configurations.
- You must prepare to account for and monitor your purchases of tracking licenses. Your purchase order history provides the means for you to audit how many tracking licenses of each product your organization is entitled to be using worldwide.
- You must separately and manually register your tracking licenses upon purchase for any HP Technical Support and Update services they include.
For information about specific part numbers to order, refer to the product web pages and Quickspecs.
