Overview

The Insight software Workload Management Pack is a software solution that controls and dynamically allocates system resources enabling application consolidation and performance optimization on Windows 2000 server platforms bringing maximum utilization, lower total cost of ownership and improved availability to IT environments.

The Insight software Workload Management Pack (WMP) provides the tools you need to fully utilize server resources, maximizing business value delivered to achieve greater returns on server investments. With the WMP software, Resource Partitioning Manager v2.0, you configure resource partitions, application boundaries defined by their allocated quantity of processor and memory resources. Each partition enjoys access to specific, limited processor and memory resources. Limited access means that resources are available for your applications when they need them. Limited access also means no more worries about decreased availability created by memory-leaking applications.

While the Workload Management Pack makes it possible to limit the amount of resources available to processes, it also gives you the flexibility to add resources on demand wherever they are needed. With Resource Partitioning Manager's dynamic rules engine, resources can be automatically added to partitions based on utilization or time of day delivering on-demand resources to your applications.

What's new

Resource Partitioning Manager (RPM) v2.0, the featured component of Workload Management Pack v2.0 is loaded with new features designed to provide more automation, more performance and utilization data, and greater configuration flexibility.

Automation:
  • Process View - Identifying all of the processes running on your system and their origin is now easier than ever. A new process view displays detailed information on all processes in tree format so that you can more easily identify which processes belong in a partition.
  • Partition-based Charting - Key processor, memory, disk, and network information is now presented in easy-to-view graphical format.
  • Usage and Performance Reporting - RPM can continually capture and store information on the resource utilization and performance of your partitions. Export the data to your favorite reporting tool for departmental billing or print reports directly from RPM.
  • Trending - RPM v2.0 now analyzes utilization data over time to characterize partition performance trends.
Greater Configuration Flexibility
  • Command line interface - When your environment requires custom functionality, the new command line interface can be used to automate functions such as partition activation/deactivation, target server selection, or activation/deactivation of the RPM service itself.
  • Time-based rules - With RPM v2.0, the dynamic rules engine can make automatic changes to partition configurations based on either utilization or specific date and time.

Ideal environment

Customers who want to identify and take advantage of unutilized resources in their IT environments.
Problems and Requirements
  • IT infrastructure contains multiple servers with over 40% unutilized processing capacity
  • IT infrastructure contains multiple servers that have undetermined utilization or have one application with minimal resource requirements
  • IT environment experiences varied workloads creating inconsistent service levels
  • Misbehaved applications within the environment require constant maintenance and negatively affect availability
  • Reductions in server management costs are required
Typical Use
  • Workload Management Pack can be used to control the way in which server resources are allocated to processes. The ability to partition server resources and assign processes to specific partitions not only makes it possible to consolidate multiple applications on a single server, but also makes it possible to ensure application performance during heavy workloads or quarantine misbehaved applications to ensure that they do not affect the availability of other applications.
