Entry (ETY) SATA Features

Entry SATA offers customers the lowest acquisition cost by leveraging the volume of the desktop market, and adding entry level functionality such as hot plug. The following features can be found on the 120/250GB SFF (2.5") and 160GB 3.5" hot plug and non-hot plug drives.
  • Reliability for non-mission critical entry server environments, appropriate for <40% workload
  • Native Command Queuing (NCQ) to increase performance of SATA hard disks by optimizing the order in which received read and write commands are executed
  • Buffer Error Detection is used to protect the data in the drive buffer via parity or ECC
  • Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) purposely constrains the drive to report the error as soon as possible within 5 seconds vs. unlimited retries
  • Microcode Download provides ability to flash new firmware to the drive
  • 3 Gb/s compatibility on select capacities
  • Ship with a standard one year warranty

Midline (MDL) SATA Features

Midline SATA offers customers and system builders the lowest $/GB drives for bulk storage solutions. With a greater set of feature and functionality over its' Entry counterpart, Midline drives provide the necessary but economical reliability and performance for more demanding external storage environments. The following features
  • Increased relaibility of approximately two times Entry drive reliability based on < 40% workload
  • Workload Management detects a specific temperature threshold, drive throttles performance to protect itself
  • Improved rotational vibration robustness for immunity to environmental rotational affects
  • 3 Gb/s compatibility
  • Ship with standard one year warranty

SATA Applications

With the attractive low acquisition cost and high capacity points of SATA drives it is important to understand the appropriate applications where SATA drives should be used. Proper usage of these drives will lessen the probability of drive failure. For high IOP's performance intense applications, mission critical applications or extreme environments HP recommends Enterprise Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard drives.
