| Q1. |
How do I get HP StorageWorks X1000 Automated Storage Manager Software (HP ASM)? |
| A1. |
HP ASM is pre-installed at no extra charge on all HP StorageWorks X1000 series Network Storage Systems, including X1400, X1600, and X1800 models. |
 |
| Q2. |
What's the difference between the new HP StorageWorks X1000 Automated Storage Manager Software interface and the previous HP All-in-One Storage Manager for AiO Storage Systems and ProLiant Storage Servers? |
| A2. |
The user experience and features are nearly identical, and despite the name change to align the software with the new X1000 Network Storage System series, HP ASM is still the same HP ASM. The difference is in pre-installed data services software: X1000 Network Storage Systems has Microsoft iSCSI Software Target standard, while AiO Storage Systems had both the iSCSI Target and HP Data Protector Express Software. HP ProLiant Storage Servers had file services only, but could be upgraded. HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software is optional for all three products.

| Q3. |
What software options can I add to my HP X1000 Network Storage System to enable HP StorageWorks X1000 Automated Storage Manager Software functionality? |
| A3. |
All HP X1000 Network Storage Systems include Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, so HP ASM automatically enables several features including “Host an Exchange Storage Group” and “Host a SQL Server Database” wizards and the ability to provision and manage storage for standards-compliant non-Windows environments such as VMware and Linux.
Installing HP Data Protector Express Software (Backup Server) enables data protection features within HP ASM, including backup of file shares or application stores using application-aware snapshots to tape, disk, or other removable media target. For more info:

Installing HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software enables replication features within HP ASM including streamlined setup of near real-time replication of file shares or application stores to a remote target. For more info: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storage/software/sm/index.html

| Q4. |
Can I turn HP StorageWorks X1000 Automated Storage Manager Software off? |
| A4. |
Yes. HP ASM does not preclude use of other included storage management tools integrated in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), and does not affect performance or other functionality. HP ASM is completely innocuous if not used, though if you want to completely uninstall it, you can easily do so through the Windows control panel.

| Q5. |
What if I install or launch HP StorageWorks X1000 Automated Storage Manager Software after I've already created file shares using a different interface? Will it find them? |
| A5. |
Yes, HP ASM will automatically discover any existing file shares, and will then let you grow capacity and/or create and schedule local snapshots.
