| Traditional perimeter security provides little protection for data at rest. As a removable media, backup tapes can sometimes present a physical security risk. They can store large amounts of sensitive data, for example, a single backup tape could easily store every credit card number in the world, and, by nature, they are small, easily manageable, and normally stored off site to ensure their availability in case of a major disaster. Data encryption insures the privacy of user data stored on backup tapes, protecting this data in the event of tape loss or theft.
Hardware data encryption is embedded in all HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 Tape Drives and, therefore, in any tape libraries using these drives. This secures data on the backup tapes and provides transparent operation without disruption to servers, applications, backup windows, data restores or network flow. They also eliminate the need to purchase and manage additional encryption devices. The use of AES 256-bit hardware data encryption provides high levels of easy-to-enable security to protect the most sensitive data.
By using hardware-based data encryption HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 Tape Drives are able to compress data at the same time as they encrypt it, ensuring that backups are completed without a loss in performance.
