Answers

Q1. Why should I use L&TT?
A1. L&TT is HP’s tape and magneto-optical device diagnostic tool. You must use L&TT to assess the health of your device when contacting HP support – they will ask you to run L&TT tests if you haven’t already done so. No other tool has the ability to diagnose HP’s backup devices so effectively and not using it may lead to misdiagnosis, incorrect replacement and continued disruption until the true root cause is identified.
Q2. Why do I have to install L&TT on my server?
A2. L&TT needs to run on a server that can directly access the device and that is normally the backup server. The system and performance checks are targeted at the backup server itself so that is where the tool must run to be effective.
Q3. Is L&TT safe to run on my server?
A3. L&TT is a safe install and very rarely causes issue. When they have occurred, issues are nearly always caused by the use of unsupported HBA drivers. If in doubt, check that your configuration is supported before running L&TT. See http://www.hp.com/go/connect for the latest supported configurations. An alternative to a full install is to run L&TT directly from a CD, USB memory stick or remote directory. HP’s recommendation is to install L&TT on the server during qualification – that allows you to identify any instability before L&TT is needed.
Q4. Does L&TT run on my operating system?
A4. For a complete list of supported operating systems, see the L&TT QuickSpec.
Q5. Does L&TT support my device?
A5. For a complete list of supported products, see the L&TT QuickSpec.
Q6. What is the best way to use L&TT to minimize my downtime?
A6. The most effective action is to assess the health of your device using the Device Assessment test. This takes less than 20 minutes to run and gives a pass/fail result with which you can go to HP support. HP support will accept the result of the test – or ask you to run it if you haven’t already done so. If the device is good then there are other tools within L&TT to help identify potential system or performance issues.
Q7. Where can I learn more about L&TT?
A7. L&TT has online help or you can download the user guide. Both the tool and the guide are available from: http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools.
Q8. If I have questions or concerns, is there someone I can ask?
A8. The L&TT team maintains a mailbox for all tool queries. Please send us your questions via email to ltt.team@hp.com. Response is normally within 24 hours.
