Overview
HP provides customers with automated tape drive products two ways to order labeled data cartridges:
  • HP Custom Labeled Data Cartridges:
    For tape automation customers that need to define an exact barcode sequence on each label.
    (Available in USA and Europe only)
     
  • HP Non-Custom Labeled Data Cartridges:
    For tape automation customers that require a unique barcode label attached to each cartridge but do not need to define the exact sequence on each label.
    (Available Worldwide)

What's the Difference?
The primary difference is lead time. Customers who want to define an exact sequence on each label must order HP Custom Labeled Data Cartridges. This requires a personalized order to be placed and additional time is needed to process and complete the custom order.*

Customers that don't need to define the exact sequence on each label can receive their labeled media much faster because no customization is required. Customers ordering HP Non-Custom Labeled Data Cartridges get a high quality and unique barcode label attached to each cartridge, but the sequences are pre-determined by HP. Customers can rest assured that the same sequence will never be printed on two different labels.

Q1. Why does HP offer two ways to get labeled media?
A1. Some customers require the ability to customize the exact barcode sequences on every label. These customers should order HP Custom Label Media products. A custom order will be placed with HP and additional lead-time should be expected.

Other customers simply need to ensure that the code on each data cartridge is UNIQUE and that no two cartridges would ever be sold with the same barcode sequence. These customers can receive labeled media much faster by ordering HP Non-Custom Labeled d Data Cartridges.

Q3. Does HP use the same cartridges for labeled and non-labeled products?
A3. Yes. All HP data cartridges pass the same stringent tests for durability and reliability.
Q4. Are HP Bar Code Labels Code 3-of-9 format?
A4. Yes.
Q5. Can I use an Ultrium label in a DLT cartridge or vice versa?
A5. No. Never apply a label from a different media type, such as DLT to LTO cartridges. Not only may the bar code be unreadable, but the label may become jammed in the drive or library robotics. Additionally, the label may be readable but it could cause the library to misinterpret the type of cartridge and proceed to insert the cartridge into an incompatible drive, possibly damaging the drive and/or cartridge.
Q6. What bar code label standards can I use when I choose sequences?
A6. HP's simplified order process enables users to select the correct bar code format for their make and model of library. HP Pre-Labeled Media is available for both HP and non-HP tape automation but the correct label must be specified. For further details, either: Go to the regional order web sites listed above.
