Course overview

The HP StorageWorks Modular Storage Array (MSA) 1500 simulation allows you to gain familiarity and hands-on experience with the MSA 1500 cs. The simulation models the hardware involved in setting up the MSA environment and allows you to update the firmware, perform a direct-attached storage (DAS) to SAN migration, and perform limited hardware failure troubleshooting.

The MSA 1500 simulation includes the following labs:

  • Lab 1 - Hardware Familiarization
  • Lab 2 - Firmware Update
  • Lab 3 - DAS to SAN Migration
  • Lab 4 - Hardware Failure Troubleshooting

The simulation provides a guided task list to step you through the identification of hardware components. You also have the option of not using the task lists and completing functions as desired. After performing those functions, the configuration of the simulated MSA can be saved and recalled as desired. This capability provides an excellent demonstration platform by allowing a desired MSA configuration to be viewed and altered.

The simulation must be downloaded, installed, and run on your local computer.
The simulation requires 67MB free space.

Audience

All Storage System Engineers

Course objectives

  • Identify the components of the MSA1500, including the: Controllers, Fibre Channel I/O module, Status Indicators, Power supplies and fans
  • Simulate use of the MSAFLASH.EXE utility to update the firmware on the controller
  • Simulate use of the MSA1500 controller's ROM cloning feature to upgrade the other controller
  • Simulate the migration of direct-attached storage (DAS) to the MSA1500; referred to as DtS (DAS to SAN migration)
  • Recognize the notification of various hardware failures
