Course overview

This course consists of two parts. The first part is a technical introduction to planning and sizing, configuration, deployment, and troubleshooting the HP ProLiant BL p-Class server blades and infrastructure. It provides significant hands-on labs based on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4, HP Rapid Deployment Pack 2.2 and HP Systems Insight Manager 5.0. The second part deals with automated server provisioning and failure recovery.

The provisioning of a server and its recovery are two change procedures frequently performed in data centers. Done manually, these are time-consuming, error-prone tasks that consume a significant portion of data center resources. The benefits of automating these tasks include reduced execution time, lower administrative costs, and precise, predictable results. This course covers a script-based solution that provides automation assistance for HP BladeSystem server provisioning and recovery, built on HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) and HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP). The solution supports a variety of HP BladeSystem configurations, including boot-from-SAN and local boot, scripted and imaged installations, Windows and Linux operating systems, and IP network and VLANs.

There will be a functional walkthrough of the scripting components provided, including the execution framework that provides task sequence flexibility and allows concurrent multi-server provisioning and recovery. Key technical topics will be highlighted, such as how boot-from-SAN server recovery is implemented.
