New England Group Honors HR's Terri Alexander
On May 23, 2000, Compaq's Terri Alexander joins an elite group, "Women Leaders of the 21st Century." The director of Human Resources is among two dozen women being honored in Boston by the Organization for a New Equality (O.N.E.), a non-profit group based in Boston and in New York City.
The award, according to Kevin Dillard, executive director of the Boston office, recognizes Alexander's contributions to promoting equal opportunity and to improving the status of those "historically" excluded from the economic mainstream. "She has a major effect on people's lives," said Dillard, who points out that O.N.E. only selects "women who make significant changes in today's society."
Established in 1985 by Ambassador Charles R. Stith, O.N.E. works with state and national legislators, the media, and private businesses to develop and implement new economic strategies. "The issue of economic inequality has been with us too long," said Rev. Joseph E. Washington, chairman and CEO. The priority of O.N.E. is to promote equal opportunity and to encourage changes that will open the economy to everyone.
Alexander's work at Compaq also improved the organization's daily operations on a technical level. Although O.N.E. was computerized, the group was working on several different platforms simultaneously, which presented communication challenges. Alexander helped arrange for the organization to get onto a single platform with Compaq computers. Said O.N.E.'s executive director with a smile, "Life is much easier now."
