Winners of B-Plan Slam Will Enjoy Compaq Technology,
Made in New England
The
Sales division of Compaq is teaming up with Lycos Labs and MIMC,
the Massachusetts Interactive Media Council, to sponsor the B-Plan
Slam, here in New England. The half-million dollar purse is the
largest for a business plan competition in North America.
One
of the ten judges is Joseph Batista, Director and Chief Creatologist
of Internet and Enterprise Initiatives for Compaq. What Batista
finds most exciting is that, "Awarding the best business plan shows
Compaq's commitment to the entrepreneurial spirit in New England."
Compaq
is contributing to the record-setting purse; offering leading-edge
AlphaServer systems with TruUnix, both of which were developed in
New England. The competition builds on the vision of Lycos Labs,
which serves as an incubator of sorts, helping companies to accelerate
their business plans. The goal of the contest, says Batista, is
"to offer New England entrepreneurs the opportunity to launch right
here in the Boston area, connecting them with local resources that
will help make their ideas achieve their full potential."
The
entry process is simple. Candidates start with a visit to the web
site.
They need to provide an Executive Summary, which is due by September
29. Even though hundreds or even thousands of initial entries are
expected, all will be reviewed as the field is winnowed down. The
top ten semifinalists will be notified by e-mail on October 13.
The next step is to submit a business plan (of up to 25 pages).
The three winners will be announced on November 10, and each will
receive the same prize.
Reflecting
on the roots of Compaq in New England, Batista concludes, "We want
to give a chance to someone else to get off on the right foot!"
CRL
Moves to One Cambridge Center
One of the world's premier computer science research facilities has a new home. After more than a decade in one location, Compaq's Cambridge Research Laboratory (CRL) moved to One Cambridge Center in May.
The 41,000-square-foot space on the 11th and 12th floors required considerable reconstruction to integrate 21st century technology features. A new computing and communications infrastructure replaced the one that had evolved over the last 10 years at One Kendall Square, including greatly improved multimedia facilities that support the lab's focus on media and human/computer interfaces. Better local and network conference capabilities also were incorporated into the new space, fostering cooperation between members of the lab and colleagues all over Compaq, including Research sites in Palo Alto, California; Houston; and Australia.
"The new lab facilities in Cambridge reinforce our commitment to doing world-class research in New England," said Bob Iannucci, vice president of Corporate Research. "This lab has three major strengths: the creativity of our people, their connection to Compaq product groups, and their presence in the wider computer science community. The new lab will give us an excellent place from which to grow these strengths and connections."
In addition to the move, the lab is also gearing up to host more than 20 summer interns from graduate computer science programs across the country. This long-running program brings potential future researchers to the lab to work with Compaq researchers and share their insights and ideas.
