New England Takes Pride in New AlphaServer GS Series Systems

On May 16, Compaq officially launched the AlphaServer™ GS Series systems, the industry-leading solution for hardware and operating system availability, scalability, and performance. The revolutionary new server was conceived, designed, and built here in New England, primarily at the Marlboro site. The trailblazing AlphaServer GS Series is a Compaq invention that is much more than a "very fast box," according to its systems architect, David Fenwick. "The AlphaServer GS320 system is the key building block in delivering solutions for customers who leverage data through multiple tiers of computers," he said.

The future looks bright for the new generation server, according to Lynn Thorson-Jensen, who is heading the marketing efforts. "There never was a better time to launch the AlphaServer GS Series system. It's going to be the cornerstone of e-businesses everywhere."

More than 100 were sold worldwide before the product was officially launched in May; one sold right off the showroom floor at Telecom '99 in Geneva. "There is such pent-up demand," she said. "From a marketing perspective, this is a wonderful opportunity for Compaq. We will now be able to offer a one-of-a kind solution that customers are eagerly waiting for. In essence, we are giving them an engineering dream."

Both Fenwick and Thorsen-Jensen predict that Compaq will "leapfrog to the front of the pack" as a result of the new product launch. Moreover, customer demand is expected to continue long after the introduction, boosting Compaq sales and profits to new heights. The company is targeting a billion dollars in new revenues by the end of the year, according to Fenwick.

"I take great pride in what we in the Business Critical Server Division accomplished, bringing out this machine," he added. "With more than 250 people involved, the five-year project was an extensive, companywide undertaking. At some point, every department, from manufacturing to software, was called upon to react quickly and with the right answers. In an industry that fuels the Internet revolution, you have to be able to adapt quickly and accurately. We proved we can do that well."

Compaq Powers New Boston Immersion Theater

Visitors to Boston now can get an inside look at the Public Gardens, Symphony Hall, Paul Revere House, and Fenway Park, all while comfortably seated in a small, high-tech amphitheater adjacent to the New England Aquarium. This one-of-a-kind "virtual" tourist attraction, Unforgettable Boston, is powered by Compaq technology.

Throughout this unique sightseeing experience, the audience uses personal computer consoles to guide Debbie and Bob, a young couple about to be married, through Boston landmarks, in an effort to "get them to the church on time." Bob, hit on the head during a baseball game at Fenway Park, develops amnesia and forgets that they are getting married in 48 hours. Debbie frantically tries to jog his memory by visiting familiar places in Boston. The audience is part of the cure in this interactive game, helping the couple get to the wedding ceremony via local landmarks.

Compaq provided a $70,000 equipment grant to support the technology needs of the project. For more information on times and admission fees for Unforgettable Boston, call 1-800-296-7600.

Compaq's Internet Security Techniques on Public TV

Compaq and Internet security were featured on Public Television in April. "World Business Review," an informative business and technology series produced by Multi-Media productions, recently went to Compaq's Nashua site to interview Tim Yeaton, vice president and general manager of the UNIX Software Division. The subject was Compaq's procedures and programs for Internet security. Yeaton discussed the need for Internet security and why Compaq picked SSH Communication technology for use in our Tru64™ UNIX and OpenVMS™ operating systems.

"World Business Review" will broadcast the interview during April on local PBS stations and on United Airlines and TWA flights throughout the year.

The "World Business Review" show ID number is 703d. For local broadcast times, check out the "World Business Review" Web site.
