Students Learn Compaq Has Jobs Beyond Engineering
Compaq professionals representing several different fields from accounting to Web design recently guided a group of eighth graders from the Nashua school district through a "typical" workday. The program was arranged through the newly formed Partnership for Education with the Nashua school district.
HR's Leigh Bodington described the partnership as a triple winner. "First, this benefits the kids. Also, it gives employees a chance to show off what they do on a daily basis; it's a source of personal pride. And, finally, programs like this give us an opportunity to be seen as good corporate neighbors."
Jane Taylor, university relations consultant for the UNIX Group, explained that, based on individual interests, students were matched with an appropriate Compaq pro. "Not everybody is an engineer here, and not every student wants to be one either," she said. "We're interested in what happens in education today, but we also want to make kids aware of what a real work environment is like."
